CB750 Left hand control
« on: April 08, 2012, 07:30:43 AM »
What started as such a simple project has lasted too long!  I decided to replace the handle bars and gauges on my 73 CB750.  As you know this requires you unplug most of the wiring in the headlight bucket.  99% of the wires are now connected to wires of their own color.  The troubling part is that 2 wires remain without a mate.  I can't determine where orange/white and the light blue/white wire go.  It seems they are for the "parking" position on the ignition switch.  My understanding is this leaves the taillight and front turn signals on while you take the key out of the ignition (a feature I've never used).

Does anyone know where these 2 wires attach?  Do they go with the solid orange and the solid light blue wires for the turn signals?

Thanks in advance!

Update... On the attached wiring diagram I do see the orange/white and light blue/white wires on the left control and the front turn signals.  So maybe one of the previous owners swapped out the control or the turn signals.  I think I answered my own question.   :)

I tried using that diagram with little success here. Could you help me out? I'm in much worse shape. Like an idiot I unplugged everything without taking pics first.

The left control harness is pretty easy it's the ground wires that are throwing me into a tail spin.

These I did not unplug I assume they are correct?

The long black wires at the bottom are from the front turn signals. I think i remember them plugging into the dual female orange wires?

Right behind that light blue wire there's a single orange wire with a double female connetor with a  cover that is half white I assume one solid orange and one orange with a white stripe goes in there?

Here's where all the trouble started. which green wires go here? I have two from the headlight bucket. One for the tack light and speedo and a couple of others.

The female black wires are usually 12V. all greens plug into each other they go to ground, dont think it matters which. I don't believe orange goes to black.  orange is one turn signal blue is the other. sometimes the turn signals are black with an orange or blue ring on them.  Best guess I can make.
I like to print the diagram on two pages, glue it to a piece of cardboard and set it close. get a beer and my cheaters be careful pushing the ends in, I've seen the ends of the wires break near the plug.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

A word of advice... Unless you're 100% sure, only plug like colored wires to like colored wires.  The only place I have mismatched colors is on the clutch switch.  And I know why I do.  The switch was not a original Honda part.  Take your time and you'll find that there is a match for every wire.  If there is a mismatch, make sure you check your years wiring diagram and determine why.  It looks much worse than it really is...

Right. The left had switch is the easy part. All colors match up to the main harness. It's the ground wires where i get into the trouble. There are two headlight bucket grounds along with some others that I'm having trouble with figuring where they go. I will try again tonight.

CBNJ74 Don't get hung up about grounds. All the green wires go to ground Think of the frame as a big fat wire a green wire. So you will take all the little green wires tie them together or run them all separate back to that big fat green wire the frame. Just make sure the spot on the frame where you hook all the green wires is clean and bare no paint or rust. Then put some dielectric grease on the connection to keep down corrosion. Make sense?

Marcuch:

Here's a link to pics I've taken of my K6 wiring.
Am replacing the crashed front end with a GL1000.
The PO had replaced the handlebar start switch with an external start switch.
That's what the brown zip wire is in one picture.
The two relays are ones I added for the headlight.
Good luck

Greens are grounds.
Black is 12V.

OK we're making progress thanks to you guys! here's the situation. I have working signals with buzzer, horn and starter and signal indicator on instrument panel along with neutral and oil light.

What I don't have after plugging the headlight back in is: Lights, running lights and tach/speedo illumination.

There only wire left are two solid blue wires which I assume is for the head light, a white wire (headlight again) and an orange wire with a stripe.

Here's what it looks like.

+1 on the running lights.  They will not work if you do no have the proper socket and dual filament bulb.  I have a 73 too and there is no running lights.  Sounds like some things may have gotten changed on you.

Sorry misspoke. What I mean by the running lights is the brake light staying on the low dim when riding and the tach and speedo illumination.

From what you can see in the picture. Does everything look correct? Those black wires going into the orange and light blue connectors are the front turn signals. On the head plug are 1 white, 1 blue with a dual female connector and 1 green.

Here I was fixated on the wiring be setup wrong and I gave no thought to the condition of the wiring in the right hand control switch. When I got home today I starting fiddling again with ground wires and then thought what if there's something going on in the right switch housing which has an on/off switch that kills the headlight and running brake light. I split it open with the bike on and when I moved it one way the lights came on the other and they turned off. It turned out the power wire broke lose from it's solder!!! I solder it back and viola!

Sorry for responding to an old post, but I thought it the easiest way to get an answer to my question.  I installed a new wiring harness on my 1975 CB750 K5 and I have run into a problem.  There is a black/red wire from the left hand control that I can find a match for.   I don't find a black/red wire on the wiring diagram.  Both my harness and control are supposed to be correct.  I think I see the same black/red wire in one of your photos.  Can you tell me where it should go?  Thanks

Correction - the black/red wire that I can't find a match for is from the right hand control.  Does anyone know where it should go?

Thanks
