Does anyone know how thick the metal is on our gas tanks?

I have a '72 and a '71 tank. Any reason the '71 would feel thicker or is it just in my head?

0.2-0.3mm sheet metal.

 That is only 8 to 12 thou, they must be thicker.
Mi am leaning toward 1 mm or more, keep in mind the top is  2 pieces welded and ground off in the middle of the tank.
 Never seen one leak there either.

The tank that I think is a 71 has a different fuel cap and nuts inside to secure the petcock to the tank.

Ive heard they are 18 gauge, 1/20", 1.27 mm

First gas cap shown   looks early.
 Is there wrinkles in the tank when you look straight into the filler hole ?
Any evidence of original color?

Not a wrinkle tank. Original color appears to be ruby red.

Over 1mm sounds thick for me. Anyone that can make a cut in a tank?

I have a cut out gas cap somewhere, with several inches of steel on either side, but not nearby.
Someone will have a cutc tank or cutout cap.
