RD350 Project

Got this in parts about 4 months ago. Heaps of bits missing as it turned out but all done know.
Fired it up yesterday for the first time. Sounds great.

The bowls was just the usual polish and buff. The bodies was lightly blasted with fine glass and had a ultrasonic clean.
I was happy with the result.


The only thing better than one LC is two. I'm going to turn the bike on the left into a " marsbar - black " colour scheme.
They sure do punch above there weight.

a mate of mine had one back in the 80s that had had someones tuning wand waved over it and it would keep up with another mates GPz750 turbo, having said that it was a total pig to ride and had a power band that would kick in when IT felt like it, not when you necessarily expected it

He he.  Every now and then ill be going   round a round about and thinking im in second gear so give it abit
and up she comes. Harder to steer with only one wheel on the ground.
Ive put about 5000km's on the other bike since a rebuild and it still makes me grin.
Half the time when I stop someone comes over and says they had one or a mate had one etc.

Ok , as you asked me nicely. Its a long term project. It runs and at a pinch i could ride it around the block. I'm slowly gathering the parts I need to make it great again.

I love the little 350's. More than quick enough and so light and nimble.
 Uses about the same amount of fuel as my cb750 though. But who cares.

sweet. I sold my big old yammy fj two saturdays ago and have got stuck into my H1 budget resto.
 Coming up a real treat with my mates help.

  Thanks Terrance.  Mate I got $2800 for it but that included a shim kit and valve tool. Needed some work but was a neat honest example.
At the moment im over those big old things and have been bitten by the 2t bug.   And have no interest to be an iron butt bloke..
. Every time I moved it around under the house I was waiting for it to topple on top of me and crush me to death. I'm unco.
Even when the wife and kids are home and I scream for help , none of them seem to hear me. 

PS. If I ever want to go down that  path again I'd get a suzuki bandit any day of the week over an fj.

Ha ha, no worries Ken, I loved the RD's and GT's of my skinny youth, but now at 6'4" and north of 300 pounds, I'd look a bit silly riding a little bike, that's why the Triumph Rocket III is a good fit for me. I loved my FJ1200, but I'll bet it wasn't as nice as yours, I still see a few around, but like mine, they've been left out in the weather, so fadedplastics and cracked seats are the norm.

I'm having bariatric surgery next month, so once I've lost half my body weight, I might start looking for a little striker, I had a minty T250 back in the 90's that I sold to a nice Lesbian couple, I wonder if they've still got it? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Ha ha, thanks Ken, it'll be good to be back at my fighting weight, my RC51 won't be as comfy though, without that big cushion on the tank taking the weight off my wrists and shoulders. Logically, sports bikes are best suited to fatties...... ;D

Yeah, we called them Widowmakers, scary rides. Exceeded in scariness though by the H2's.

That is a lovely old "Widow Maker" Ken, I remember riding one back in the 80's, and was impressed with the acceleration, it was a hairy little beast! ;D

Thanks Terrance.  I on the other hand have never ridden one.
I rebuilt the crank. New pistons and a re bore.  everything else too.
I hope it goes like the clappers .
Having said that, my 98 R1  carbies model has the same light switch power delivery.
Just like a 2 stroke. I hope it thrills me like that beast.

You've got a nice collection there Ken, I wish I had somewhere better to "showcase" my 12 or 13 bikes (plus projects) but I'm sick of not having enough room in my garage, and paying $300 per month for a secure storage facility for the ones that I can't jam into my garage, so once I've finished recuperating from surgery, I'm gonna unload 9 or 10 bikes. I can't decide which, but it's gonna happen.

The thing I remember most about my frantic ride on the Kwaka 500 was that as it accelerated, it seemed to twist itself out of shape? I doubt if your R1 does that, once again I've only ridden an R1 once, and I remember it being rock-solid at most speeds. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Good one Terrance. I have all the time in the world to look after my bikes. I pride myself on being able to jump on any bike and feel safe in the fact its roadworthy.
 
Well, not anymore. Money is an issue.  I've only 6 bikes now. Most of them now have at least a little hassle . A f#cked  batt or in need of a charge. .
A weeping m/c or a stuck clutch.
Not to mention a seized caliper. Heaven forbid a stuck ring. It's never ending.
i'm seriously considering selling one of the RD's to bring the bikes down to 5.
So far this year , I've sold my xs1b. old triumph bonneville and the fj.  I still am chasing room.
I want to be able to walk around each bike without smashing my shins into foot pegs or stabbing my hips on the handle bars or indicators.

Back to my R1 Terry. I dont really like it that much because if I forget to show restraint it wants to flip over on top of me. Its a beast.

Yeah mate, my neighbor offered me a ratty R1 for $1K a couple of years ago and I thought about it, but it was one more annual Rego fee and insurance etc, so I reneged. It was awfully quick though, just not my cup o tea. ;D
