Custom Exhaust, anyone?
« on: January 10, 2007, 06:54:58 AM »
Just wondering if anyone here has built a custom exhaust for their CB? And I mean from the exhaust port to the end of the tube? Actually, even from an after market head to the end of the pipe?

I'm currently running a stock exhaust on my bike and, while I like it and it's in good shape, my mind keeps drifting to other things to make it really stand out.

I am gonna me making a custom set of pipes for the CB450 project, once everything else on the bike
is complete. Gonna do something similar to XS below, yet alittle different. I am gonna run the headpipes close to the motor
like on the XS, then either have them exit under my legs, or do a 2 into 1 thing.
Should be a fun little project, and make the bike just that much more killer when I am done with it...

It looks OK.  ;)

What is it for?? A 750 or a 550?? I was wondering where I could get a 4 into 1 collector like you have there...Thinkin', maybe I could take my two sets of 550 pipes and make one 4 into 1 with a collector like that and a SS riceburner [car] muffler...   :)

It's a stock 550F collector.I've stayed awake at night trying to figure out how to bend my own headers.A mandrel bender should do it,but automotive shops don't have mandrels small enough(1&1/4")  for 550 headers.

Find yourself a good chassis/racecar shop, they will be able to bend whatever you want.

It really cant be that hard.
All you need are some scrap pipes to chop up, a welder, and some time..
I plan to wrap the pipes so the welds dont have to look/be pretty in anyway.
Gonna do black headerwarp with some chrome "gun drilled" tips/caps of some sort.

I'm thinking that about any good muffler shop should be able to bend up a set of pipes.
At least that's where I'm going to check on, when the time comes. They bend exhaust pipe for
a living, you know? Speaking of custom exhaust, check this out.

Something like this, is what I was thinking about. Simple, yet nice.

Well, around here, nobody can do 1&1/4" pipe, not the most reputable of muffler shops, racecar shops don't exist in this dimension and how do you get each compound bend x 4 exactly right the first time to avoid repeated trips to the shop? I wouldn't attempt it unless I had a mandrel bender in my back yard that I could machine a mandrel for and spend plenty of time experimenting with. As for welding bends and straights together, I weld for a living and I can't weld elbows and downpipes together well enough for the seams to become invisible after grinding, chrome plating shows off the tiniest imperfection( I've worked in a plating shop too) , but if you're wrapping, the weld method should produce usable headers. I've figured out how to fabricate the collector but can't use it because I can't find a way to bend headpipes!

I TIG welded an exhaust for a Toyota Supra out of 304 stainless elbows & tubing...the welds were pretty enough to not bother polishing...and anyway, it's supposed to look like a race-fabricated exhaust...   ;D

         Hey Killer,
I hadn't actually checked with any muffler shops, I just figured that surely, with all the different size exhaust systems on vehicles now days, surely bike pipes could be shaped there. Well, live and learn, huh? I hear ya about wanting the pipes to look, at least, somewhat decent. Years ago, my Dad used to take a straight piece of pipe and cut narrow "pie shaped" pieces out of the pipe( at places he had marked but leaving the pipe in one piece), then he would carefully bend the pipe to the shape he wanted and weld up all the cuts. His pipes didn't look bad either. He painted his with stovepipe paint. I did see a guy take a pipe that my Dad had made for him and have it chromed. Good looking pipe.

I tried the fillet method and it decreased pipe diameter in the bend. Maybe I should try again, cutting out much smaller pieces.Did your father basicly cut slots into the pipe?

Go to your local metal supplier and ask about anyone who has bought any chrome moly tubing. They will have a bender. Or go to a drag strip, or any race track and ask around. Someone has a bender. That is the only way to make a roll cage that is legal! And the only way to bend the light tubing you will need. Exhaust shops won't have that small of dies.
The thing about common sense is that, it's not that common.

Yeah, but the slots were slightly wider where the cut was started. I'm supposing the number of cuts would depend on the size of the curve. The best I know of, he would just look at where the pipe was going to be put, decide how often the cuts would be made (to try to give the pipe as smooth of a curve as possible), start cutting and shaping the pipe as he went. That's the best I remember. I don't know how much he would remember now but, when I get the chance, I'll call him and see what he could tell me about his way of doing it.

You won't get any performance from cutting and welding because the little cuts on the inside of the pipe will not let air flow freely like a smooth bend will.
The thing about common sense is that, it's not that common.

If you started with a stock (or aftermarket) header, 4 into 1, 4 into 2, whatever; you should, I would think, be able to find a shop with small enough pipe then, wouldn't you think?

Killer is referring to mandrel bending which is a specialized way to do
it that doesn't decrease the inside diameter of the pipe.
Muffller shops use a die bender that does decrease the inside diameter.

This may have been made clear in an earlier post.

Hey Killer, how much to make up an extra can?
