Interesting non-political thread, started with abortion, dabbled in religion, and gun control finally raised its head.
As far as abortion goes, the argument has never been very consistent. One point of view says you are killing babies, another side says nah, the fetus is not 'viable', so no harm no foul. Some people say they are against abortion because of the baby killing thing, but they are willing to make an exception if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest. So they have tacitly agreed that some babies deserve to live more than others. Or they will say it is OK to save the life or mental well-being of the mother (not content to leave it to "God's Will"). People (and the Supreme Court) has said it is OK to abort a fetus while it is not viable (defined as being able to survive outside the womb, even with medical intervention), generally thought to be up to 28 weeks back in 1973. Inconveniently for that point of view, lots of babies are born prematurely before that point and survive and they sure look and act like babies. Wiki says the record now is around 21 weeks. Even people who believe abortion is OK will say a woman 'lost her baby' in the case of an unwanted miscarriage, no matter at what point in the term. And what about the killers of pregnant women being charged with 2 counts of homicide no matter where the mother is in her term? There are plenty of other inconsistencies on every side (notice I didn't write 'both') of the debate, but this little epic is already long enough.
So what do I think? Once you you have more than a group of undifferentiated cells, abortion is killing a baby. Do I think abortion should be outlawed? Nope. Society has decided it is OK to kill certain babies, even though most are unwilling to look square at what is happening, preferring to obscure what they are doing with considerations of 'viability'. Who am I to go against society? And nature itself does it all the time. So ladies, go ahead and use abortion as retroactive contraception. Let's just not kid ourselves about what is really happening.
