I hope I"m pushing an open door here :

This is true democracy. Feckit, I wish I was there.

I can not speak to the previous conditions in Ireland,  I have never been there. But as for abortion being a "solution " for bad treatment of women to me it is a stretch, the child pays the price for one or two other people's actions/choices...........hence the slippery slope. The analogy of 2 wolves and a sheep fits because of the lack of integrity on both sides of the argument  (2 wolves ) and the masses inability to reason (sheep) ANY issue to a logical end.

Ah yes, true democracy -2 wolves and a sheep deciding what is for dinner!

I for one think that if killing unborn children is progress then I want no part of it. Terminating a life seconds before the top of the head sees the light of day fits the criteria of not breathing.........so where is one to draw the line? Making abortion legal opens the door to a whole new nest of issues, it is indeed a very slippery slope.

No wolves or sheep, just the populace of the Republic of Ireland. They decided so their wish prevails. Please tell me your views about the previous system, I did in all fairness provide many sources for consideration.

Don't worry about me, we'll see what happens, if there is a god and a thump after I leave, you'll know that I'm questioning. Worse Kev I'm a Scots and there is two types one so tight assed you couldn't get a grain of rice up and the other who says let's go for the world twitching. Bring on the dancing girls and the water of life and song, let loose your cat's of debauchery. Hounds of war doesn't seem to be working as well as it used to .

Interesting non-political thread, started with abortion, dabbled in religion, and gun control finally raised its head.

As far as abortion goes, the argument has never been very consistent.  One point of view says you are killing babies, another side says nah, the fetus is not 'viable', so no harm no foul.  Some people say they are against abortion because of the baby killing thing, but they are willing to make an exception if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.  So they have tacitly agreed that some babies deserve to live more than others.  Or they will say it is OK to save the life or mental well-being of the mother (not content to leave it to "God's Will").  People (and the Supreme Court) has said it is OK to abort a fetus while it is not viable (defined as being able to survive outside the womb, even with medical intervention), generally thought to be up to 28 weeks back in 1973.  Inconveniently for that point of view, lots of babies are born prematurely before that point and survive and they sure look and act like babies.  Wiki says the record now is around 21 weeks.  Even people who believe abortion is OK will say a woman 'lost her baby' in the case of an unwanted miscarriage, no matter at what point in the term.  And what about the killers of pregnant women being charged with 2 counts of homicide no matter where the mother is in her term?  There are plenty of other inconsistencies on every side (notice I didn't write 'both') of the debate, but this little epic is already long enough.

So what do I think?  Once you you have more than a group of undifferentiated cells, abortion is killing a baby.  Do I think abortion should be outlawed?  Nope.  Society has decided it is OK to kill certain babies, even though most are unwilling to look square at what is happening, preferring to obscure what they are doing with considerations of 'viability'.  Who am I to go against society?  And nature itself does it all the time.  So ladies, go ahead and use abortion as retroactive contraception.  Let's just not kid ourselves about what is really happening.

Well put Greg. And I have no easy answer, except to say again that the regime that exists in Ireland simply did not work. Change was needed and in my opinion took too long to happen. Did Ireland go too far ? I don't know, but a step forward is better than no step at all.

Please also note that we have not had a woman contribute to this thread yet.

I am a Catholic but I do not put the interests of my Church or any other Church ahead of  other people's rights. I am pro choice about a lot of things. In the case of abortion, it is not up to the State to choose or judge. If an individual chooses  to to abort, they will have to account for their actions after they pass. That is if there is a judgement.

I like going over mountains, Kev, better than going into them, never been to the Irish ones just over the Rocks several times in real air planes not the alloy buses that they call airliners where you are insulated from the ground, ah the good old days where you scorched  a leg off one one side and froze the other one off and you can hear the intimate noises of hydraulics, engine vibrations/fluctuations and air causing creaks and groans as well as the captain inventing new swear words because some one forgot to turn the piss tube heater on and he picked up frost bite of the dongus. Those were the days when I could sleep like a baby stretched across the main spar of the a/c absorbing the frequencies/rhythms of flight, one of the great loves of my life airplanes, That's why I have to make a pilgrimage down to see VRA and rub used 100 weight into my hands. Once a fitter always a fitter, the smell the smoke the wind howling past you as you lean back into the slipstream and bounce, listening to the big piston engines, jets are ok but for real feeling you want the rumble of a big piston engine in your spine and rib cage.

Ps God I miss walking a flight line.

Wet being water injection, and Rolls Royce Merlins 1760 hp I think they were Mk XX's. Ah back to yesteryear and a place far away.
