Spokes to Mag Wheels
« on: May 30, 2018, 06:06:36 AM »
I have a 1975 CB750F that I have been slowly restoring/modding. Last year I replaced my old rims with new DIDs and spokes, the spokes have already rusted over the winter I haven't tried cleaning them yet but it got me thinking about maybe switching over to a mag style wheel. Are there any that are bolt on? I've seen Lesters pop up every once in a while but I haven't been able to find if they are bolt on or if they require switching out forks. Any insight would be appreciated.

Lesters make a set for the F model but the 18" rear wheel can be difficult to find because of the disc brake. Probably not many out there still for a two year model run.
Were those spokes some cheap Chinese E-bay things to rust that quickly ?

I'm guessing they were cheap material, this was where I got them http://www.nichecycle.com/ncs/categories/wheel/spokes/16-57201-honda-cb750-front-spoke-kit-chrome-by-emgo.html... I figured it was a long shot but I could atleast keep an eye out maybe get magically lucky. Is there anything like widths that matter or just look for a 19" Front and 18" Rear with disc? I know on the tire faq it says the hub number for the rear was 20400.

If you want to stick to an 18" rear wheel there aren't a lot of easy to find wheels.

Most likely you just have some minor surface rust if the spokes are new. Try using some 0000 steel wool, they should shine right up. Then apply some chrome polish to them to limit future corrosion.

It needs to be the specific 6 lug pattern for the 75-76 750 F.

Any 19" wheel that fits on a 500/550/750 and 75-77 GL1000 Goldwing will work for the front. The wide compatibility is why the Lester front is easy to find. Not that many wire wheel 750F's were sold, so not that many were changed out to alloy wheels, which is why they are so hard to find.

Understood, I'm going to try and clean them up, I'm sure they'l come out fine. It just got me thinking of switching to a mag wheel especially after the headache of getting them spoked and trued last year. Brought it to a honda dealership and only one tech knew how to do it  took him a week and a half, should've found a local shop just didn't know any better.

not totally true ...rear for any f model is interchangeable  75-78,  77/78 came oem with a comstar but the spoked hub of the 75/76 is a direct swap.  The front wheel is NOT interchangeable between 75/76 and 77/78 f's.

I forgot to add "Lester" I meant any 19" Lester meant for the 500/550/750. I don't know if they offered a wheel for the F2/3

They did...and yeah it's really rare.  So, Danny is basically right.  There are mag(really mostly cast aluminum, the magnesium ones are totally out of this world rare) wheels for the f bikes, but they are pretty hard to get, even when you have lots of money.  I have a couple different f bike specific wheels, and no, they are not for sale.  I have been collecting this stuff for about 8+ years.

There are of course other options if you are willing and capable of fabbing and modding stuff.  Kawasaki stuff seems like it should swap on pretty easily...Suzuki and Yamaha too.  And just about anything has better brakes than a Honda sohc!

Gotcha, definitely willing; capable may be a different story. But I'd be interested in learning and trying. Could definitely use a brake upgrade, no matter what I do the front always seem to drag making it really hard to roll. Done a master cylinder rebuild, sanded the paint off the brake pad etc...

I've been looking at wheels from other 70's bike that have a rear disk with this in mind. I am just waiting for a good deal to pop up.

Any advice on which are easy enough swaps? I saw Sean had Kawasaki Suzuki and Yamaha might be but do you know any specific models?

Your spoked rear wheel is rare and popular, You might find someone willing to do a trade. The easiest swap is the 77/78 rear wheel and front fork/wheel swap. It's a bolt on with comstars.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Pretty sure all balls has bearings for nearly any swap, so if you can splice in a steering stem, that is the hardest part, for the rear, you will need the access to custom spacers

I do have a 78 CB750F parts bike near by for sale for something like $550....I've seen that a lot of people not a fan of the comstars is that generally just a preference for spokes?

A lot of people just don't like the look. Plus Honda kind of half assed it with those wheels. They weren't sold on cast one piece wheels and so did a 2 piece. So the Comstars are relatively heavy for an aluminum wheel.

That said, I like them.

Comstars saving grace is they are really nice and round and generally stay that way.  They are not much heavier than lesters.
