60mph @ 6k RPM?
« on: June 01, 2018, 08:00:26 AM »
1973 Honda CB350F 60mph @ 6k rpms. Does that sound right? And what toothed sprocket would I have to go in the rear to lower the rpms in 5th gear. I don’t want the bike screaming when I’m only doing 45-55 mph

These bikes were built to run that way....You're doing absolutely no hard running it at those RPMs on the highway.

My CB550 sits around 6,000-6,500 between at 70mph and I've cruised at that for very long periods of time. The engines purr after doing it, it really lets them run good for a while; much better than stop and go.

The sweet spot on these bikes starts at 5k and stops at the top. There is zip for torque, so you need the rpms just to maintain speed on any kind of incline, even at speed.  Thats what is neat about them.  Even the reviews from back in the day say the same thing.  Thats how they are made. :)

The owners manual says to never go beyond the red area on the tach and to not to stay in the red area for too long. That means it’s totally acceptable to kiss the redline often. I too hangout around the 6500-7500rpm area.

So correction to my above post - I was on the freeway today and my CB550 sits around ~5,200 at 70 mph, I'm closer to 6,000 rpm at 80 mph....Just thought I'd clarify that in case other folks read this in the future.

Either way, point stays the same - the bikes are just fine (and happy) riding along at those RPMs, and 6K for a 350 sounds about right.

6k at 60mph is right, in my experience. I rode at 70-75 and up to about 8k on the freeway in PHX -- plenty of room before hitting the redline, and in the higher rpms that these bikes like. If you do a lot of city or stop and go riding, best to keep the revs up too. And I rode in Phoenix year round, including 100+ degree heat without overheating problems (just keep moving...).

Update since original post.

I am now getting used to the higher rpms at higher speeds. And I’m liking it  8)

Forgot to mention this is my first bike so I am still a bit timid.

In CT it’s mandatory to go through a motorcycle safety course. Helped me a lot in getting comfortable on the bike. Not sure what the laws are in PA but if you haven’t gone through a MSC then I highly recommend it.
