Thanks Burma...my wife and I volunteer at the local animal shelter on weekends.  We found her there after our 13 year old lab passed on.  She is very affectionate as are most the retrievers.

i'm sure that most of if not all of you that have pets will agree that they all have such different personalities, some quite funny. if anyone here has abysinnians (breed of cat) you might understand this. my littlest cat (6 pounds) Rocky is part abysinnian and he has all the personality traits of one.

"Abyssinians are extroverted, willful and intelligent, but are usually not "lap cats", being too preoccupied with exploring and playing as they would in their natural habitat. Although very popular among breeders and owners, Abyssinians aren't often used as show cats because of their shyness towards strangers and their timid nature. They have quiet, engaging voices that can often be misleading. Abys, as they are affectionately referred to by their fans, need a great deal of contact with the family to keep them happy and can get depressed without daily activity and attention.[3] They generally get on well with other cats, although they need their space and the females can sometimes be irritable around other cats. Abyssinians are known for their curiosity and enjoy exploring their surroundings, including heights, although they are sensible cats that do not take unnecessary risks.[citation needed"

rocky has a new trick. i have an office/desk chair in the living room that i sit on when i play the guitar and like most office/desk chairs it spins on it's base. rocky discovered a couple of weeks ago that he LOVES it when i spin the chair really fast and let it go till it stops. he actually will jump onto the chair now and meow and holler at me till i spin the chair for him. if i ignore him or i'm busy with something and cant spin him right when he wants it, hell run up to me and nip me then run back to the chair and meow some more. he pins his ears and bushes his tail out so it's shaped like a pinecone.

these cats just never cease to amaze me with their antics. even whem i'm feeling bad about life they almost never fail to make me smile or laugh.

the pic below is one of rocky in one of his favourite spots, the top of a bookcase in my office.

Teddie (Pom) with the eternal bad hair day
Pete (Poodle) Unfortunately for him, I'm his barber (mohawk all the time)
Grace (G Sheperd/Doby) She's working, and always wants to cary stuff for me

My aunt had a standard poodle named "Colour" that literally changed color every two weeks or so. Most often some rendition of Fuchsia or sea foam green. That's a poor dog. hahaa.
Too cute fishhead. Neat dogs.

They remind me of my Sasha (now gone). His favorite place in the whole world was lying at the top of the stairs with his paws dangling over.

If anyone here remembers my last dog Sage... Well after he has been gone for two years, I finally went to Minneapolis yesterday and got a new Irish Wolfhound puppy. Right now his name is Crammer or Connor. Will see which name sticks in the next couple of days.

Sleeping the afternoon away only like a puppy can.

Lovely dogs, BIKE.
Are the Saints as bad as they're reputed to be with the slobber?
How long do they usually live?

They are every bit as bad as their reputation when it comes to slobber, no joke!
Major slobber all of the time and it's 10x worse right after she's eaten and drank some water.
Sophie is about 145lbs though, very large for a female, that may have something to do with it.

Chloe, saint/mastiff mix, doesn't hardly slobber at all.  Huge difference between the mastiff and saint.

It is my understanding that the average life span is about 8-10 years for a full breed St. Bernard.  That's stunningly short really.  Sophie is 8.5 years old right now.  Getting up there.  She has slowed down quite a bit over the last year (sleeps more, runs slower, doesn't bounce around as much) but she has shown no health issues what so ever.

Actually the reason we got an English Mastiff/St. Bernard mix was specifically to get a longer living dog that had the amazing personality traits of the St. Bernard.

Great dogs, great with kids, very obedient, very social.
They also make great ground hog killing dogs as she's killed about 40 in her 8+ years. ;D

...............It is my understanding that the average life span is about 8-10 years for a full breed St. Bernard.  That's stunningly short really...........

I also heard the bigger the breed the shorter the lifespan. We've had Bernese Mountain Dogs for the past 16 years. When we began to be interested in them (about 20 yrs ago) they're life expectancy was about 10-12 years. Indeed the dog that made me fall in love with BMDs was about 12. When we got our first one, it had shrank to 10 max, but both Ben & Brandal (1st & 2nd dogs) only lasted 8 yrs. Sam, our third died at just 5 yrs. Now we have Toby, and judging from the other dogs the breeder reared, should last until 10.
Unfortunately BMDs are bred for their looks and not health. But with responsible breeders maybe they can reverse the trend.
