retrofit choke assembly
« on: May 14, 2018, 03:48:17 PM »
Anyone ever retrofit a lever choke assly to a set of 46 carbs (78 550) from and earlier model?  Want to remove the cable assembly entirely.  Bore the same?

I entertained the idea for a bit but I ended up relocating the choke knob. After that I didn’t like it so I put in a bored out 650 motor with hotter cam, stage 2 porting and race carbs with a choke lever. :))

It wouldn't be as simple as a retrofit. It would be far easier to source pre-77 K or any year F carbs.

Seems like the best option!  I am waiting on a deal to come along and I'll be doing the same.

I think I will take my spare choke linkage and see if I can braze or thread additional length on it to get it long enough to come out of the carb body.  From there I can manage some type of control lever.  Might need to redo the spring function in the middle, but I think it will be fine.

If it ends up working out well, post back what you did and how it functions.

While I believe the earlier choke assemblies will fit the 46C housings, before I start tear down, I bought a set of what should be 627B carbs with a manual choke.  I may just swap and start tuning these.
