Tax collection scam calls
« on: June 06, 2018, 02:05:35 PM »
Something I notice today, I took the day off and haven't even looked at my phone all day.  So I pick it up to check e-mails and see 11 calls.

My phone is habitually turned to Do Not Disturb during work hours - 6 to 5pm, so I never hear the calls anyway.

But I get 11 calls all from different cities, all of them with the same 50 second robotic voicemail proclaiming that I will be arrested for failure to pay my taxes - unless... I call this number within 24 hours.

I can't imagine too many people actually falling for that - but even less will fall for it after receiving 11 of them in one day with identical messages.  If you'll forgive the pun - it's almost like the scammers are phoning it in these days. :P

Old people fall for that crap all the time. That and 419 Nigerian scammers.
If it didn't work they wouldn't be doing it still.

Lot of old folks fall for them. That's why they keep on doing it.

They busted one of the "Nigerian" guys a while back in Texas. Had stolen a few hundred K if I'm not mistaken.

I've won the Spanish lottery several times. At least according to various emails that have graced my Outlook inbox. Odd thing is I have never even bought a ticket.

Yep sadly it happens here too, old folks, (especially those who don't speak English very well) have lost millions to these crooks. I worry about my Ma, she's 90 in August, and while she's still got all her marbles, she comes from a time when folks were a lot more honest than they are now. If I could find one of those turds, I reckon I could convince them that honesty really is the best policy..... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Yeah my old man started to lose it plus he is deaf as a stone. They called him with the grandson scam. The caller poses as a grandson that has gotten busted for pot in Canada. The bail to leave the country is $1,500. Some Sgt get on the phone and supplies the banking info. It worked.

Got an email some years ago saying I'd been left 750 000 pounds from a relative and all i needed to do was send them 6000 pounds to cover costs etc .
I asked them to just deduct it from the 750 000. Never heard back from them and it never turned up.

Yep, even in bucolic tourist area Vermont I have received the above calls. TO weed out spammers I answer the telephone in French. I know right away it's someone that doesn't know me.  >:(

Got a check several years back for "....a Honda CB750 gastank with motorcycle to please my..." etc etc
Letter was full of grammatical errors.

Certified check was from the BankofScotsland, in Bern, Switzerland.  Well, turns out the bank did not have a branch in Bern, and that's when I noticed the bank name was misspelled also.
Darn, that check would have been nice to cash at the time.

My cell number is 202 - thats DC area.  I get calls from people who got the IRS call from my cell phone number.  I guess there is a way to change what number displays as call recognition.

I talked to AT&T and there is nothing they can do except change my number.

Also got one of those IRS calls.  It was on my answering machine.  Caller said his name was Steve Martin.  In his less than perfect English he stated that unless I returned his call, a warrant would be issued and a constable would be sent to arrest me.  I guess he forgot we are not still part of the British Empire.  The only thing I could think of when he said his name was him sitting at a desk with an arrow through his head and a banjo in the corner.    ;D

Yes they can spoof any exchange or number. They make it appear as a local call or even give it a legitimate name such as a well known brand.

Yeah, phone number spoofing can be bad when people SWAT others. Guy in Doodah got shot dead by police when some punk-assed #$%* swatted him after he beat his ass on some online game and the guy that got killed had nothing to do with their stupid game.  ::)

There is something called norobo which works pretty good on home phones. It's free.
