CB750K4 idle issues - solved!
« on: June 07, 2018, 04:48:08 PM »
I had some hanging idle issues recently after an engine rebuild/836cc kit and thought Id share my experiences here in case someone is searching for an answer in the future. I searched all the posts "hanging idle" and did learn a lot but none of those were my particular problem. Here is what I did:
1. Would idle great at rest. Balanced the carbs and all were even. Would go for a ride and idle would hang around 2000rpm after a few miles.
2. Tightened all band clamps and made sure no air leaks at idle - none. Go for a ride and idle would hang.
3. Changed carbs to a freshly rebuilt set. Still hanging idle. Ok so it wasnt the carbs.
4. Go back to original balanced carbs - a comment by MikeR got my attention when we were balancing carbs: those band clamps are not OEM are they? No they were the plumber type ones but fit perfectly in the groove. However knowing better I suspected that at idle they were fine and when riding they probably loosed up a little and caused the hanging idle. So replaced all engine-carb clamps (x8) with OEM - got a great price on these from Parts Unlimited.
5. Reinstalled carbs.
6. Spark plugs were DENSOs but I had no record for last 7 years of ever having changed them. Could find DENSOs easily so opted for D8EA for now. Installed new plugs.

7. Test ride: idle at 1200 - 1400rpm. Sits there quietly. Good throttle snap, nice smooth acceleration. Hanging idle gone.

Now to try and get a little more from the 836 cc engine (K4) as I feel my 810cc bike (K2) is a little snappier, more power and accelerates better. I suspect its the megacycle cam MikeR put in....

Hope this helps someone else with hanging idle.
cheers
Andy

I am confused, Andy.  Was it clamps or spark plugs?

Sorry I went to Scotland for a week hence the late reply.

" was it the clamps or spark plugs?"

Good question. I changed both at same time so cant say for sure but it was running fine before engine rebuild with same plugs so I am going to say the clamps...Ill update here if I am wrong...

PeWe: Ill take a pic of the clamps this weekend and you can decide for yourself...I may be wrong about the clamps...

Off to Laconia Motorcycle Show tomorrow in New Hampshire...

cheers
