shock upgrade
« on: June 12, 2018, 06:34:47 AM »
can anyone enlighten me on swapping out stock for SA or SA1 hagons and their progressive springs?  is the $400 investment a vast improvement over stock?  any other suggestions?

Anything will improve the situation over stock. Your shocks have 40 year old oil that is degraded, as well as old, hard seals and are generally completely used up, likely many years ago. Lots of people really like Ikon over Hagon, and I would agree having handled both. Hagon are nice and the steel body looks more stock, but the Ikon are regarded as a better shock overall by many. I would also forget progressive springs up front and go with Race Tech emulators and straight rate springs. Suspension is what keeps you in control, and its the last place people should cheap out, but often the one place where they do.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

My Ikons look like they came with the bike -- closer to stock look than Hagons if you want the shorter chrome caps. Certainly one of the best upgrades you could do.

Awesomecb, where on the Ikon site were you able to find the chrome shocks? Searching for my bike (400F) I can only find black:

https://www.ikonsuspension.com.au/shop/76-4002/

The Hagons on the other hand seem to have a ton of stock-looking options, like this one that would match mine (although they don't specify any sizing)

I have Progressive shocks and i'm ready to change them out, I don't think i can rebuild mine but I've noticed my ride is much harder lately. I'm going to be in the market for an upgrade soon as well.

Thanks, unfortunately that's what I did and the black set is all they have for the 400F. The Hagons should work for me if I can contact them about sizing.

Odd, because I found it. For a CB400F right?

Not trying to push Ikon on you. You would be happy with Hagon, I'm sure. I had those on my first CB750.

Unfortunately you can't use that one on a 400f, you need a fork type fitment at the swingarm end, not an eye like that has

Sorry I did not mean to hijack this thread and make it about my bike. Thanks for the Ikon link. Somehow I was no able to find the chrome ones you linked, only the black option. The 400F does not have the small shrouds at the top, though (not sporty enough ;) )

Both the Hagons and the Ikons show an eye-to-eye connection. Interesting

yeah $350 for rear shocks hurts especially when i have a ton of other stuff to get.  all parts i'll probably be at $600+ with a front and rear set up not including shipping.  race tech emulators and straight rate springs for the front...carpy honda repops for the back and i can get it done for $370 plus shipping.  yeah i know the carpy stocky shocks are probably not much better than stock but they aren't 42 years old either.  unless i'm miscalculating the race tech parts this seems like the plan.  at best i probably take corners at 150% the posted speed when pushing things which isn't very fast.  this is when i really want to lean the bike which probably looks like a 5 year old on a big wheel going down the driveway.  unless someone has any experience with the carpys and can say they are worse than 40 year old stock, today this is the plan.  don't judge me.  ;-)

Overfill the tires is another issue that make bike too hard to ride. My bike feels best with stock pressure written on the CB750 label on rear fender. The sustained speed pressure. Bike has Ikon shocks and progressive fork springs from Wirth.

Shocks are the best riding improvement you can make to a bike. Plain and simple. You will ride whatever you spend, meaning cheap shocks ride like crap, good shocks ride like a dream.

You can’t apprciate the difference on a website because you’ve grown so accustomed to the poor performance of them. Buying a shock setup for your riding weight is all the difference too. Weight yourself fully riding gear dressed and provide that info to the shock and suspension company. They will provide the correct springs and valving for you on your bike.

Once installed, you will not believe you ever rode the bike happily before. It will feel like a completely different bike, your confidence riding will be over the moon, and you will be much, much safer.

Yep, quality stuff costs more, and despite economic reports, the agricultural changes of money growing on trees hasn’t been widespread, but do yourself the favor of spending what it takes once, to get it right, and don’t spend 30-50% on 1/10% the quality.

I’m not judging, just trying to save you the money.

thanks calj.  yeah i'm torn on the subject.  i'm not doing it tomorrow.  will have to ponder.

Echoing what Cal and others have said. I race with my 750, but invested in good suspension as everyone I talked to said that would inspire more confidence in riding than any other single aspect of the bike. I well full bore and did Race Tech front and rear, using their G3S shocks. Yes, it cost as much as a running CB in some areas, but it handles exceptionally well and there is no compromise in this area. It's checked off the list forever and I never have to wonder if I could have done better. Hagons seem ok an have good reports, but for a few sheckles more, the Ikon seem to be a very good value.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

My Ikons 7610-1296SP have settings 2,2 that can handle me + passenger. I ride mostly solo but handling is OK for my use.

I just emailed Ikon about the availability of the chrome/chrome option for their 76-4002 shock (fits the 400F).

They're $350 but I believe you guys when you say it makes a difference. The last two rides I went on I was paying attention to the damping on my 400 and it was pretty atrocious. I always thought that was normal. But I will be getting the Ikon shocks. Then for the front!

If one could get EMGO shocks at a deep discount, would they only discover that EMGO shocks aren't worth the time spent installing them?

I contacted Ikon and they're going to be able to get the rear shocks made for me when I'm ready, still having trouble pulling the trigger on such a big purchase.. not to mention the race tech front set up which will also cost me about $350, wonder if they give a 10% discount ;)
