NE Ohio. 71' CB500
« on: June 17, 2018, 06:23:12 AM »
Good morning folks,
My name is Will. I've been lurking in the forums here for a few weeks since I picked up a 500four from a friend at work. He heard me talking about bikes and donated this one to me. He said he just didn't have the time or interest to really focus on it, and wanted to see someone do something with it. I was surprised to find little to no boot wear on the cases, pegs, shifter, and brake. I was very grateful. It seems gently used.

I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade so I have, or have access to, most tooling required to do something with the bike.

My past two wheel exploits consist mostly of older air cooled two strokes. Never any road bikes, and never a total build like this.

I tore down the top end yesterday after letting the seized old sweetheart soak in PB for a week. With a little heat, and a lot of patience the top end came apart. I honed the cylinders and they came up beautifully. Everything in the bottom looks fantastic. No rust.

I do have some questions about some items that came on the bike, but I'll post those in the main forum. I think it has some odd forks with a big damper knob up top. It also has a POSA on it that I'd rather switch out for a conventional carb rack.

I want to thank those that maintain the forum, and especially those that contribute. Forums like this are an invaluable resource, and I bet they increase the survivor rate of these old machines over the years. Thanks!!!

Any CBxxxFour folks in NE OH?

Will

Welcome aboard.
Those are Italian forks, they will look great cleaned up . Let me know if you cant stand them, I would buy them.
Rear shocks are S &W looks like, I wonder what is in the motor. Bike looks like it was someone's pride and joy at one time.l

That's what I was thinking.  It makes me feel old that enough time has passed for that bike to be purchased new, ridden, probably put away for a number of years, gotten back on the road with some mods that took someone a fair amount of time, then land in a haystack and sit long enough to look the way it does now.  It's sort of a metaphor for what has happened to me physically over the past 40 years LOL!

Thanks for the replies.

754 The stanchions have some pits. There aren't any conventional mounting points for a caliper. I am wondering if I can source some new legs and use the same tree.

Thanks!

If you want to sel, the lower legs or fork assemblies less trees , let me know.
You can mount brakes to those but it's tricky and they are pretty narrow..

754,
I would be interested in letting them go, and opting for the Sumer route of mounting original cb forks. You wouldn't happen to be able to help me in that way would you? Also there is some pitting on the right stanchion. The left has one pit within the travel. Here is a picture of the right. I can get better photos this evening. This one is dark. Not sure if you can work with that. Thanks. I'm also interested in a set of carbs.

Welcome from Texas.   Start a build thread in Project Shop area, you'll get more views there and we'll answer all your questions.

And post in the Parts Wanted area for anything you may need.   I had a '71 CB500, nice bike. You should have no trouble getting reasonably priced parts.
