'75 CB550K Throttle Cables
« on: January 16, 2007, 07:54:10 PM »
I'm looking to replace both of my throttle cables as my current ones are a bit short due to the PO having installed low-rise bars which I have since replaced with OEM bars.  Anyway, I'm looking at the Z1 site and see the 'Push' cable is listed as 37" long while the 'Pull' cable is listed as 40" long.  Is this correct?  A 3" differential seems a bit much, but who am I to say because I can't just go out and measure the existing ones to see.  I checked the parts fiche, but they're just listed as throttle cables with no lengths indicated.

Thanks in advance.

Just checked the length of my cables (as the 550 is in pieces at the moment!) and the first cable, (not sure if it is push or pull) measures 83cm (approx 33 inch?) and the second is around 79cm (31 inch?). Mine is a '74 model. This is measuring from "ferrule" to "ferrule". The 4cm difference in my cables equates to 1.5 inches. Hope this helps!

Thanks, and good point on where the measurments are taken.  The Z1 site actually states:

Pull: Motion Pro Throttle Cable 02-0007 - 40" long (end-to-end for inner cable) with 3.75" slack (max amount end-to-end movement)

Push: Motion Pro Throttle Cable 02-0008 - 37" long (end-to-end for inner cable) with 3.5" slack (max amount end-to-end movement)

Hmmmm, the plot thickens. ..

Ok - now, measuring the actual length of the cables (not the sheaths - I may have been incorrect in my use of the word ferrules! They would be the round things on the end of the cable?) we have 96cm exactly for one and 100cm for the other - that's push and pull respectively.... those measurements for the Z1 cables, if I am understanding correctly, are about half an inch longer than for my "pull" cable and about the same too short for the "push" one?? Sorry, I am probably just confusing things!

Really, it would be sooo much easier to be using just the metrics...   ::) nice round measurements!

I hear ya on that one.  Anyway:

Pull: 40" = 101.60 cm & 3.75" slack = 9.53 cm (MrZxp, you have 100 cm; about the same)

Push: 37" = 93.98 cm & 3.5" slack = 8.89 cm (MrZxp, you have 96 cm; about the 1.18" longer)

I assume you have a stock set-up, or reasonably close?  If so, the cables Z1 is selling are OK for the Pull but maybe short for the Push.  Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...

As far as I am aware, it is stock... the cables seemed to "fit" nicely when on the bike.
