Removing starter permanantly
« on: June 24, 2018, 06:10:51 PM »
Hello Forum,

I'm a new member to the forum, thought I'd pose a question out there and see what you people think.

I have a 1971 CB550K that is now more bobber project.  The electronic start has not worked proper in years, mostly because I like kick starting the bike and don't care to fix it.

Could I remove the starter motor and battery? there's some weight there and design ideas I could do without the battery box taking up space.

There's no need for a heavy 12v cranking power battery. Once the bike is kick started, the alternator can power everything I need.

Is it possible, is it worth it, anyone else do it?  Starter motors are heavy right?

Let me know what you think.

If you pull it you have to plug it.
I may still have some plugs.
They are heavy.

Unless it's different from a 750 you need a battery to start and run the bike. It can be smaller though since you won't be running the starter with it.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

The weight you save will make absolutely no difference in performance. Feel free to switch to a small Lithium battery, but I wouldn't bother to pull the motor.

To be more exact, the engine will not start without a battery. With no stored power from a battery, there is no power for the ignition - and no spark. Since the alternator needs field coil power to make power, no amount of spinning it will get it making power without a battery to power the field coil and "start" the alternator.
Once an engine is running with the alternator working, you can disconnect the battery and it will keep going. Not advisable though, the voltage regulation goes pretty crazy and you're likely to burn out lamps.
