Removing stator & field coil
« on: September 28, 2010, 05:59:41 AM »
So I'm trying to remove the stator and field coil from an alternator because A) I want to have the housing polished and, B) I want to install a finned alternator cover.

I've had the screws soaking with PB Blaster since last night and they are still stuck TIGHT! Did the factory use thread locker?

I have an impact gun and a screwdriver bit for it. Would I damage the stator or coil with the hammering/vibration of the impact gun? How do I get the screws loose?
I guess I could leave the stator winding in there for polishing, but I need to get the three screws out of the field coil in order to mount the finned cover. Any ideas?

Nevermind. The impact gun made short work of it!

Might as well test it while it is out, it might save you doing it all again.

One would normally use a hammer impact driver, a gun may be overkill. But glad you got it out.

Sorry to dig up an old topic but it has photos already, saving me a new photo upload.

I have my 71 CB500 alternator cover off the engine and want to polish it without the stator and field coils and wires getting wet, pinched, etc.

When I remove the obvious three screws on the inside of the cover, the coils come loose but will not come out of the cover.  What am I missing?

The stator coil screws from the inside, through the coil. The three screws on the outside hole the field coil. Once the screws are all out both coils will come off, it may take some wiggling. The stator is located fairly tightly by some bosses in the cover.

Thanks- that was indeed the case.  I just didn't want to force it and break something.
