outboard starter, drag racers?
« on: June 28, 2018, 11:28:27 AM »
Having a hard time finding any useful information about what car starter motor to go with  ::)

Turning my trusty GS 1500 in to a Super Comp Bike (8.50 index class) and the rules allow me to ditch the weak starter clutch and I'm happy to do it.
So... recommendations? Thanks!

Juha, not certain what the SOHC Honda guys use, but I've got a starter from a Toyota truck, V6. 1986-96' is the range I ask for in most cases. Just be sure its the heavy duty starter. There are two, but one has a higher kw rating which is the one you want to use. If I get to the shop in tonight, i'll try to get a number off the starter for you.

Probably similar to Toyota, my flattrack buddies are using HARLEY starters.

Juha,

Here's the starter number: Its 16578s and is 1.4kw. You should be able to do a google search using that number for the exact application, as this might just be a USA nomenclature. You can also try starter # SND0105, its a 1.6kw starter for a 88-94 Toyota 4 runner/pickup.

We used those years ago but stopped messing with them. They are twice the weight of the Toyota starter and don't last as long. But those old Chysler starters are strong and will turn anything over. I still have one sitting around the shop.

Toyota starters are easy to find and fairly priced as well. Now all I'm wondering is should I go with the '84 GS 1150 fairings or the Pro Stock GSX-R fairings my friend has for sale  ;D

It's nice to return to something I absolutely love to do, building and racing drag bikes.
