Hey all,
First post here! A wee bit of background.... I bought a 79 CB650PZ from a friend who took it apart to build a cafe racer out of it and never got any further! It is in very bad state, with multiple (bad) re-sprays and half the parts missing. I bought it to use as a donor bike for a electric motorcycle build. Don't hate me at this point - it is something I find interesting and I have built and tuned many combustion engines/racebikes so I fancied doing something different here. Cafe racer CB's are ten a penny.
So far I have hit the easy stuff, rebuilt the forks, brakes and sourcing a spoked front wheel. I found a new product which is a spoked rear with a hub motor built into it which will service the back and it also allows me to ditch the large drum brake in favour of a disc. Nice.
The next main job on the list is to start going over the frame and I have a couple of questions. First is a broken rear shock mount:
It is only the stud that has snapped off, the mount itself is ok. These parts don't look serviceable as they are welded into the frame. Has anyone come across this before and how have they tackled it? I was going to just drill out the stud, tap it to the next size up and just use a larger nut to retain the shock.
Also, looking at the engine mounts on the frame, their appears to be a section of frame the is bolted on on the right side. It is pretty much one side of the engine cradle. Is this there to allow the engine to be removed? Since I don't need an engine anymore, I was wondering if I can lose the mount and just weld the section in place (similar to the LHS) but I want to confirm the purpose of the removable section first.
Any insight into these two things would be great!
Thanks
Luke
