CB550 Advance rotor wobble
« on: July 01, 2018, 02:18:49 PM »
Trying to nail down the timing and can’t quite get 1/4 and 2/3 perfect simultaneously. Looks like I’ve got a decent wobble in the advance unit/ rotor. This is after replacing the bolt that runs into the crank. All mating surfaces appear to be clean and flat. Any ideas? Could the advance unit itself be bent? I’ve included a link to a video showing the problem

the advancer shaft itself can be bent from someone cranking on the 'big nut' too hard.
get it spinning on a dial indicator, and see if its out.

new ones might be still available.  they are for the 750...

They can look bent when they are not.
Unless I'm mistaken, even if the advance shaft or bolt is slightly bent, it does not stop you adjusting to get the timing correct.  However if out of true it can cause erratic timing when running. Which you should see on a timing light if bad.

So when you say can't get perfect simultaneous,?  are you saying that when statically timing with a light, using all of the adjustments on the timing plate including the 2/3 points baseplate adjustment you can't get the 1/4/ or 2/3 points to open spot on on their respective timing marks?   or do you mean something else?  and I'm missing the plot

Careful application of a hammer can straighten the shaft if you wish to  give it a go.  Work slowly to sneak up on it.

Pulling plugs and not using the big nut is recommended.

I had to tap mine straight on my 750. Now I never use that nut for turning the engine, even with the plugs out. I take the plugs out and use the kick starter and the back tire with it in gear.
It’s too fragile.
