Steel CB750 Clutch Lifter Plate - Who Makes Them ?
« on: July 01, 2018, 04:47:38 PM »
Someone was making and selling an aftermarket steel clutch lifter plate for CB750's and if I remember correctly, they were around $80 U.S. or so, but I cannot find them. Can someone point me in the right direction ? I of course, cracked my lifter plate upon reassembly of the clutch....even though I was trying to be extremely careful !

Budman is making billet aluminum ones. I have one in my race bike. Quality part.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

The most common cause of broken lifter plates is due to misalignment of the splines:

I did ensure that they were aligned before fitting the clutch pack to the mainshaft. I did notice that the pressure plate could still be pushed rearward after install and I kept pulling it back toward me to lock it in during the tightening of the mainshaft nut and offering up the springs and lifter plate. It feels like it is aligned correctly if I jiggle it back toward me. Does this sound familiar ?

I broke one ear long time ago when I was too eager to tighten all 4 bolts. Important to be careful the last part when plate start to get some spring pressure.  A little on each bolt in an x pattern, max 1/2 turn increments. Same when taking it apart the first part when pressure is high.

My stock plate has to hold Barnett CB550 springs that are a little bit harder than CB750 + a washer under each spring to make more pressure. I had some slip before, now not.

Yes, although I was trying to be extremely careful, that is where I blew it...I didn't use an X or cris-cross pattern in my quest to get it done. May or not have been the reason but surely would have been the best way to do it. But, most likely was  :(

I managed to catch my plate on one of the seating posts. It was just off a bit, and 1 point got to much pressure and popped when I was trying to balance the torque across the bolts. I bought a NOS replacement, but was stupid careful the second time installing. I am sure the aluminum billet Budman is making is ALOT stronger than the stock cast ones.

Lube the 2 parts where they slide in together. If they start to bind there's a good chance you may snap a tit.

As you tighten the bolts, they should all feel the same as you go round/across.

If one feels tighter than the others, then the plate is not sitting true.

I just had the one I broke welded; will not know for a while if it works OK though, as I took one out of another motor and it's way down the list for working on.
