Wheel Truing Recommendations
« on: July 02, 2018, 09:20:06 AM »
Hey all. I was wondering if anyone had any preferred or recommended shops to go to get their spoked wheels trued in Northern NJ. How much would a job like this cost? Never had it done and just wanted some info before going in. Thanks!

In Old Tappan, there's a shop that works on vintage Japanese bikes only.  I'm pretty sure he can true your wheels.  Call Pete at Supercycles, 201-666-1370.

Why not get the tools to do it yourself? Never been a better time to learn a new skill. The tools will likely cost less than a shop will charge to true two wheels.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

When I did my K3 750 I bought the stand, wrenches and a dial indicator with a mag base. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and tore into it. I found it to be a sort of meditation, came out nicely.
I would do it again.

I agree heartedly. It's not as hard as it first appears and there are loads of how-tos here and on YouTube. Start here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,368.html

A truing stand and spoke wrench will run you about $70-ish. A dial gauge and magnetic base, which make the job easier than using the pointer thing on most stands, adds $25-ish.

I might go this route, only problem is it seems like you need a bit of patience for this which I'm sadly lacking haha.

Nice! About how long did it take for you to complete it yourself?

I just finished truing mine a week or so ago and it is not that bad. I collected as much info as I could, watched videos, set up in my living room, pushed play on The Wire (amazon prime) and went for it. It was my first time and it did take me several hours split up over a couple days but I did it, and I'm not good at anything. I got them within .02 inches. Its not that hard just be prepared to spend some time. Here is a good article by wowbagger.
