Petrol Tank.
« on: August 20, 2018, 08:47:44 AM »
I am getting involved with my brothers CB 400/4 and coming from the days when all I rode were bikes with Norton featherbed frames, where the tanks were flat bottomed. I was trying to figure out how the CB400/4, uses both sides of the tank that fits over the single top tube of the frame, when the tank isn't fitted with any sort of balance tube connecting the two halves of the tank. The petcock has a RES as well as the ON and OFF position. Puzzled Bill W.

I think what's left on the non-petcock side is minimal, based on the design of the tank -- the rear of the tank has a little rise between sides, but not much. It's certainly not like earlier bikes such as the CB160 or Cb350s that required crossovers.

When I have run completely out of gas on my F1, I have rocked the bike to the left to "slosh" enough gas to the petcosk side to get me to a filling station.

If you look at the back of the tank near the seat the tunnel is very shallow. lack of a balance tube means that the tank will never be truly empty, but the amount of fuel left will be nominal.

Thangs for the replies. As the bike is still in the rebuild stage, I haven't seen the tank mounted on the frame. I though that the answer would be something logical. Bill W.
