"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

Very sad, only consolation is that he's up in the big race track in the sky now, racing his dad and Uncle Joey.  :'(

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I don't know where on the circuit William had his accident, but it's a circuit I know well. Have a look at the challenges facing a competitor there :
Road racing in Ireland is not for the faint hearted. Very satisfying when things go well, very unforgiving when they don't.

And the tunnel is not as fast as it used to be now that they have a chicane at the end. I was on a TZ250 once in the heat of battle and was less that two inches off the line, got tangled in the grass verge at the edge of the track and next thing I had plopped down into the ditch at about 90 mph. I thought "this could yet end OK" till I hit a fcuk off 4" pipe running across the ditch and went right through the screen. The Yazaki tacho almost made a Eunuch out of me. Maybe I should have joined you down the pub.

Racing yarns apart, it's tragic for the family.  https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/skerries-100-race-goes-ahead-after-william-dunlop-killed-in-crash-1.3557939

I hope they receive the consolation, comfort and peace that they so sorely deserve.

i know many guys in the british islands see it in a different light but when i went to the iom site during this year's races i was a bit shocked to see how the organization informed visitors of the lethal accidents this year: "statement on behalf of the ACU"

https://www.iomtt.com/news/2018/06/04/statement-on-behalf-of-acu-events-ltd

really polite way of putting it, but for my outsider eyes this simply looks like denial.

Touching letter from William's mother, who has had more than her share of grief already.

She reads like a strong lady. A quintessential Irish woman.
My grandmother emigrated from Ireland to Australia with my mother.
Stoicism would seem to be a common trait with Irish woman.
