gas mileage
« on: July 08, 2018, 07:26:36 AM »
I have been running my 650 nighthawk around town since I got it back together and was wondering what I should be getting in gas mileage ? I have only put 65 miles on it and I am not sure how well my reserve switch on on fuel valve will work. would like to be prepared for running it out of gass

Then take a bottle with fuel with you.
I run every new(to me) bike totally dry once, so i know how far i can get on reserve.

Thanks that's a good idea I'll have to give that a try.

The stock CB 650 inline four was a lean burn EPA engine.  50MPG was "normal".  However, it was likely measured on the highway in top gear cruise.  Pretty clear that using lower gearing will make MPG worse, as the engine turn more per mile.  But, your driving habits will be the dominant factor in what you experience.

And then there are the owner "improvements" which generally disregard any before-and-after measurements to determine actual performance change.

There are a lot of posters that tout their improvements with the yardstick of "no problems", as the ultimate benchmark.  At least no problems they chose to perceive in their driveway cruise.

How far the reserve will last is the constant question. I do not wanna get fuel stop.
Even if I should know the exact amount of fuel left when time for reserve, I do not know if all fuel can be used. I remember episodes with my K6 tank when I had to lean and shake bike sideways while riding the coughing bike to make the fuel flowing to the petcock, chokes on  and heading  to the gas station where it died.
I guess reserve around 5L in my CB750 tank

Today a new old tank style with old 2 pipe petcock. I need to let fuel flow in a canister until time for reserve, change can and let it flow again and see how much that will come out. My std consumption is 0.6-0.7L/10km. 39-33MPG
Seldom as low as 4OMPG.

Reserve does not get you far on any of the Hondas
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Thanks for the info . I am not sure if the reserve switch will work for i just stuck a short tube in there when I rebuilt the fuel valve. this week end I am just going to drain the tank to see if it works and see how much comes out after . I was just wanted to know the mpgs so I can anticipation about when it will hit reserve .my best bet would be carry some extra fuel and run it down .
