Seat repair?
« on: July 13, 2018, 09:23:21 AM »
I have a 750 K2 with the original seat. It is just beginning to split along the outer “stitching “ , maybe about an inch or so long, right along the outside longitudinal line.
Does anyone have a method for repairing this or something to prevent the split from growing?

Not really looking to re-cover the seat at this time. Just want to know if someone has a method to repair cracks in the seat. Thanks

This has come up a number of times. At 46 years old there's no way to fix or stop it without it being ugly. Time for a replacement. If the bike is not worthy then put duct tape on it, but if it is your avatar then it is worthy. Get a quality one from gumtoo on eBay and do it yourself.

There is no stitching on a stock seat.  What it does have is embossed impressions to simulate stitching.  Embossing is a heat iron imprint into the vinyl.
When it begins to split it is because the vinyl has lost resiliency and has become brittle with age.

You can delay cover replacement by removing the cover and gluing a patch, about 1 inch larger than the split, under the split with a reinforced cloth backed vinyl section, using Shoe goo.  (clean the area with alcohol first)  You will need to let this glue dry at least 24 hrs before placing it under stress.

Be aware, that all your present vinyl is now facing embrittlement.  And, you will soon have new cracks to patch until you finally give in to seat cover replacement.

Thanks for the replies. I know it’s not real stitching on the seat, that’s why I put the word in quotation marks.

I guess it is inevitable that I will have to replace the cover. I will put that on the winter project list.

David Silver has K2 style covers. K2 is different from any other year.
