Cable recommendations please
« on: July 10, 2018, 03:29:34 AM »
Does anyone know where I can purchase a complete shortened cable set for my CB550F that is based in the UK??

4into1 has them but too impatient to wait for international delivery!

Not overly keen on making my own!

Thanks

Al

Depends on what you mean by shortened. European bikes generally have lower bars, and hence shorter cables, than similar US models, so simply getting EU cables may be all you need. It can be difficult to get the right length - I know from experience!!

Try searching this ebay shop: https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/acmotorradteile

I have got several parts from Andy and the service is good.

Even if his prices are a bit more than US prices, remember you will have to pay VAT on whatever is sent to you from US plus a customs clearance fee.

I just did that with CB400F cables from 4-into-1. I have standard EU bars.

The pull cable is fine, but the inner of the pull cable is too long; when I twist the throttle the pull cable bows and pops out of the lever. I'm going out to measure it later today and compare against the short (EU) cables sold by Andre Cepok. Will let you know what I find.

If you're going to DSS or CMSNL and are in a hurry, DSS is much quicker, esp if you're in the UK - almost next day, or two. The part numbers for the EU cables are: 17910/20-341-611 (check, just to be sure) it's the 611 that's the important bit.

I've found the same thing with the 400F cable and 400F bars on a 500/550. The spring tension on the carb bank keeps the twist grip where it needs to be, but I can manually roll it forward and make too much slop in the cable. I've only ridden it a few times like that and it doesn't seem to cause an issue, but it's there.

I measured the 400F cable at 82cms. This is the same length as the -611 cable for the 750.

When I roll the throttle open, the push cable really bows out, the nipple rotates so the wire lines up with the hole and it drops out. When I roll the twist grip fully closed the pull cable bows a bit, but stays in place. I wasn't confortable with this, so I came up with an ingenious solution - a cable tie!! ;D

A better solution would be to take it to a shop that makes cables, and have them shorten the cable and solder on a new end. That's not a great fix with the zip tie. The return pull cable can't actually do its job like that, and potentially could cause fouling of the throttle. It would be safer to remove it and just use the pull cable until you get it shortened or one of the proper length.

Was the 400F that different in location of the cable runs and its angles for the cables causing that much of a difference?  Too bad there isn't a simple solution like another wrap around the bars.  Redoing the cable end is your best solution as the Honda OEM cables are hands down the best cables to use...

I've been puzzling about this, because the bike is completely stock, and this cable would appear to be the same length as the OEM cable. The length of the black casing/adjuster is fine.

I don't think I can shorten it either because when I close the throttle fully, the cable is taut.

I though it might be a routing issue? I've run the cables from the grip down through the triple tree to the right side of the frame, through the triangle under the top tube and down to the carb lever. But the route won't change the length from adjuster to nipple.

All the cable tie does is to stop end rotating the very last bit and allowing the cable to line up with the gap in the lever.

When I played with it just now, winding it on and off, it seemed to get better; maybe a little more lube and use will fix it!  ;D

You have Wemoto in UK

I have their Slinky glide cables on my CB750 K6. (throttle cables and clutch cable) Fits perfect. US higher raised bars need longer versions though.

David Silver has a lot of parts too, you need  to search on part numbers to find everything they have
