Ball bearing integrity
« on: July 16, 2018, 06:53:18 AM »
Removed the countershaft bearing with two hammers. I used the handle of a wooden hammer to drive the bearing out while hitting it with another hammer. Thinking I could have hit to squarely on the center of the bearing, and this could have compromised the integrity.

Do you think the bearing is ok?
How do you check if a ball bearing is still worth reusing?

You don't, you just buy a new one. Bearings are cheap enough you just replace it.

The only real safe way to remove a ball bearing is to press or tap directly on the "retaining" race. Hammering through the bearing will often damage the races and/or the ball bearings inside. By "through the bearing" I mean pressing on the inner race when the outer race is the one that's press-fit into something, or hammering on the outer race when the inner race is press fit onto something.

Basically any kind of impact force that has to be transmitted through the balls isn't good.

Ok,great advice all the way around. So now where do I get a ball bearing set for everything in the engine? Haven’t found a cheaper set.

When I go to pop the new bearing in. Throwing in the freezer for a couple hours before hand should make it easier to insert right?

Maybe I’m missing something here. You’re talking about the countershaft bearing mounting it back on the shaft, correct? The outer race goes into the case halves that are put back together with the shaft in place so that doesn’t matter. If you freeze the bearing and are trying to put it on the shaft  you are making it worse as the inner race will now get smaller. You would want to warm the bearing and not cool it I would think.

You’re talking about the countershaft bearing that fits into the case, right? The one by the oil pump? If that’s the case then yes, freeze the bearing and it’ll pop right in.

Yeah I’m talking about the countershaft bearing going into the case. It’s definitely a snug fit.
