Dodged the bullet
« on: January 13, 2007, 06:22:47 PM »
Well I dodged the bullet today. Nice warm day so I decided to take a ride, put battery back in the 750 and she started right up so let her warm a little then took off and rode over to a friends hanger where he is building a airplane. Helped him for a hour or so and was straiting to put on my jacket and helmet when I saw something about the chain that did not look right, looking closer the clip for the master link was gone, don't know how long it has been gone, the side plate is still there so left the bike there till I can get a new one. This could have been very bad. Just pure luck that the chain was in a spot where I could see it. Dannie

Luck smiled on you today. After reading this, I went and checked mine. OK now,

Dodged a bullet indeed, and I had it happen to me too.  Just happened to look down at the chain and the clip was gone.  Good thing is that the side plate  was a press fit, and has to be pried off.   :o

How about doing a 1 mm hole in each of the pin and securing the clip with a little securing wire -like in the race bikes-?

If you have a modern chain, correctly fitted I wouldn't worry too much. The side plates are a force fit on the pins and the clip is just an extra safety measure ( although I wouldn't ride without it ;D) Get a rivet link if your concerned
