250 Ducati Monza Project, might build a mini Super Sport
« on: July 20, 2018, 05:57:40 PM »
I started a build thread over on motoscrubs.com: http://www.motoscrubs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2707&p=20158#p20158

I just picked up a pair of Mid-60's Ducati Monza 250, plus a scrambler frame, and some parts, for $800.   They're pretty rough.

Because both of these are pretty rough, I'm thinking for the cost of restoring one, I might as well just build a cool custom instead.
I just found this body kit for Ducati singles.   THIS is what I want to do with it!

I'm definitely wanting to build up wheels with flanged alloy rims, and will do a 12 volt conversion, LED lighting, and likely one of the digital ignition systems as well.

Any motor parts with the scrambler ? They have hotter cam , and I think can run without battery, unlike the Monza.
The bike you showed with the fibre glass is a wide case frame, yours are narrowcase.

Good eye on the wide-case. The kit can be made to fit the narrow case bikes as well.
I didn't get any parts with the scrambler, just the frame.

I don't mind running a battery, as I want good lighting on it as well.   I am planning on doing a 12-volt conversion, electronic ignition with programable timing maps, and LED head and tail light.   I'm also thinking I'll go with a 28mm Mikuni carb in place of the worn-out 24mm Delorto.   My friend that is going to rebuild the engine will do his magic on the porting of the cylinder head and port match the carb, intake and cylinder head.

The end result should be good for 30 HP, not bad for a sub-300# vintage bike.   8)

The guy I bought these from has TWO Mk3 Desmos (like this one):

One is really nice, the other a little rough.    Another friend of mine also has two of them, again a really nice one (in his living room), and a rougher one (although he may have sold that one since we last spoke, as that was the plan).

I'd love to have a Desmo, but, they go for crazy money.   Heck, just a Desmo cylinder head can go for $1,500-$2,000.

My friend doing the rebuild has done coil-spring conversions on the springer heads.   I may go that route, as it allows for a more aggressive cam profile.  I'm going to listen to whatever he recommends, has he has four decades of experience hot-rodding all sorts of motorcycles engines, Guzzi, Ducati, Yamaha, and others.
