Cb400F side Stand
« on: July 21, 2018, 08:11:42 AM »
Hi, all!

Just bought this CB400F and I'd say the lean angle with the side stand is a bit too much.

I removed the screw and tried to bend the tab a bit, back to about 4" from ground to side stand (while the bike was sitting on the center stand).

The thing is that as soon as I get her back on the side stand, she leans and bends all the way back as before.

What am I missing? Do I need to have this weld?

Cheers,

Would it be possible that the rear shocks are longer than standard?

Rust on the tube by the side stand is common.  Especially if you were able to bend the mount.

Nothing should bend and then bend back, that's a bad sign that the stand mount area is rusted badly inside the tube. Likely to break off suddenly.
If the back wheel is an inch or so off the ground when on the centre stand, the side stand should leave the bike at a decent angle. If your rear wheel is on the ground on centre stand and you can push it off easily, the sidestand angle will be steeper. Maybe overly long shocks are fitted as the 400F ones are shorter than bigger Honda bikes but have the same end fittings and will mount OK?
Bigger than original tires will do the same thing.
If a bike is "cafe'd" and lowered the side stand leg is usually either useless or shortened to suit, maybe you have a modified leg?

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

It doesn't seem rotted, as I had to put a bit of muscle to the wrench to bend it back.
Ill check both tires and rear suspension, just in case.

My sidestand just about broke clean off this weekend.
Nothing for it but to prep and weld.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

But you shouldn’t be able to move it at all.  Those are solidly mounted on that rail.
