got a set of roll starters,these work fine but you need to run a car on one side of them for drive,need to convert them to electric,12 volt with foot control ,any body done this,thought car starter motor ,pull the power off and free spins,all help appreciated

I built a set from scratch for my race bike. I used a diesel tractor starter motor, linked to drive rollers by chain. The whole thing runs through a heavy duty solenoid and a foot switch. Use the biggest power/ground wires you can get. My pic shows 6ga but it was updated to 1ga since the wires got so hot from amp draw I melted the terminal off my marine battery.

Just curious as to why you couldn't use an outboard starter on the end of the crankshaft. We do this with drag bikes. Do the rules say it has to be roller started??

Not sure if you are talking to me or the OP, but for me, while that was an option, in the event of a getoff you risk bending the crank snout or otherwise damaging the end making it unusable. I prefer the roller as it works quite well, keeps weight off the bike and keeps the engine narrower. I have only ever seen one guy running an outboard starter on his bike.

thanks for the pic,have seen all sorts used out on the salt,twin angle grinders to mobile honda 5 hp on trolleys,your job looks great,tidy and compact,would be able to modify mine to the way yours is,cheers

Methinks you need some gear reduction between the starter motor and the rollers, like larger sprockets on the rollers. How are you guys coupling the starter motor to the drive socket of the outboard starters?

We sometimes use a roller starter at the flattrack.
 Use a streetbike to power it, make sure to pull in your clutch when the racer fires up.l

yes mine would maybe need a clutch setup on the rollers ,have a veteran racer that has no clutch on it ,thinking the throwout on a starter would let it cruise once power off,know not a lot about these electric things,certainly handy for machines that i have with there own clutch

Nah, runs a treat. Every electric roller starter runs direct drive in some way with no reduction. Wires were too small to begin with. I should have done a bit more research in that area.

I use a starter motor with planetary drive now and I feel it needs less power and obviously a ton of torque. Just another suggestion.

This was my setup guys. All in one, bike stand, tyre warmer, start roller and trolley Which I could push around by the bikes bars.

thanks folk for the advise and help ,at a swap meet at nambour today(sunshine coast queensland)and grabbed a ford starter motor,recon have it figured with your help see how it goes,bloody good forum this one,glen

Yes blacksmith 1. It was built for Land Speed Record breaking but we have no salt lakes in the UK.
However, it was tested on a couple of drag strips on very high gearing and performed well despite a big problem in the ignition and carburation .
The longest track we have in the UK is 1.9 miles and would have been plenty enough to get the job done but a nasty accident drag racing in America forced me out of racing altogether in 2014.

gday sam,no good mate with accidents for sure,my brother and i raced out on lake gairdener ,huge salt lake in south australia,both got records on my brothers modified sr 500 yammie over the years,mighty machines out there,two that stand out were a 700 velocette,nearly 200 mph,and modified suzi waterbottle at 244mph,sights indeed,cheers

Thanks mate and I do keep up to date on what's going on down there through a mate called Bob Lambert (Tiny) who ran in the 175 class and now runs a blown CBR250 Honda in the 250 class.

the old mate wilso made phil a bolt on leg ,used a whipper snipper motor and mini tank treads,bloody characters for sure
