Muffler packing
« on: July 26, 2018, 01:13:22 PM »
I want to install the replacement Kerker muffler I picked up at Mid-Ohio. I repaired the damaged baffle but I am not sure what to do (if anything) for packing.

Do I need it? Is the baffle and end cone alone sufficient? Pick up a bunch of stainless steel scouring pads?

Depends on how your ears and brain perceive the alleged "noise"  ;)

Even the Kerker competition muffler is not bad. I was pleasantly surprised.

I repacked a Kerker for my 78f 2 years ago. Source up fiberglass muffler packing, wrap semi-tight around the baffle, then cut 4 strands of tie wire wrap the glass with the wire and secure the fiberglass. I put as mush glass as the canister would allow. Nice deep tone.

I repacked an old kerker for my '78k with a fiberglass packing kit from the local cycle shop, $7.50 for the kit  I think.  Before packing it had a bit of a howl.  After packing (wrap and tie fiberglass) it had a very pleasing sound.  Insulation glass should work the same, just don't pack it real tight or hard.  Just my opinion from limited experience.
intrigued by the wail...seduced by the scream.

Any half decent dirt bike shop or Cycle Gear will have packing material. Do not try and use regular Pink Panther stuff, it will not last. The right stuff is cheap.
