I had this issue today, trying to torque the 32-ish foot pounds needed on the clutch basket nut.

Engine is on a stand, no chain around to use as a whip around the sprocket. Certainly cant hold onto the basket with bare hands lol, and shoving something in there to wedge seemed like a bad idea.

I pulled the sprocket hex head nuts out, left the sprocket on, put a pin spanner in the thread holes of the sprocket, put in gear, let the pin spanner come in contact with the engine mount/stand, hit the required torque no problem. Got that whole side put together.

I planned on replace the sprocket anyways, not sure if it fouled the threads or not.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, and if you do it carefully you can sometimes get away with it.
Use good judgement. ;)

I have used a piece of wood the drive sprocket can chew on while tighten the clutch nut with 5:th gear in.
Last time with engine in frame, drive chain on. Something block rear tire.

Motion Pro Clutch and Sprocket tool around $20. It has 2 pins on a Vise Grip type of tool that will hold a sprocket and also the long fingers to hold a clutch basket.
