Oil tank empty after sitting
« on: July 31, 2018, 08:53:34 AM »
After the bike sitting for a month, I went to check the oil tank of my recently re-built '71 K7. The tank showed zero oil on the stick. I know it had a full tank of oil. None has leaked out. I'm presuming it went back into the crankcase. Is it safe to start the motor in this condition?

If concerned you can always turn off the kill switch and crank it over with the electric starter to drain the pan. Looks like you need to get in touch with Elan for one of his oil stopper kits. Drop the oil pan, drop the pump, repair then re-install the pump and pan.

Yep - I can vouch for Elan's little stopper kit.   Pretty easy fix.

My CB750 K6 was like that from the beginning and during 100.000 km + some more until It got another oil pump keeping the oil in tank longer.
No problems at all. Easier to change oil with min oil in tank.

It's Ok until it chooses to leak out of the sprocket seal. I need the kit and a sprocket seal.

My K6 has never leaked a drop thru the sprocket seal.

There are also new oil pump parts from forum member Messnermoto to help keeping the pressure up.

The scavenge pump is quite large compared to the pressure pump, when the engine wet sumps because the stopper valve leaks it might delay oil pressure to the engine for a second or two (while the scavenge pump gets oil into the tank) but this is not a problem. Fix it if so inclined, it is a good idea to drop the pan and check the pump screen now and then anyway. The pump unbolts and drops out the bottom, and installing the new stopper is super easy. New O rings for the connections to the main case would be a wise investment.
