New wire harness and backlight not working...
« on: August 03, 2018, 08:16:33 AM »
Hello forum!
I bought and installed a new wire harness on my 72 cb500. Many of the old wires are refitted and worked on over the years, with seemingly random colours, so sometimes I've had to guess and to try and fail on what cables connect to what on the new harness. Now everything seems to work but the back light. I've also removed the turn signals, so I have a couple of left over connections...

So my questions are:

1. What is "front stop switch" in the wiring diagram? I always assumed it was the engine killer switch, but it doesn't fit with the wiring, so now I'm confused...

2. I have a switch that switches on and off the light (back and headlights), but it doesn't seem original. Is this my front stop switch?

3. Also there is a loose black cable that comes out of the harness, by the ignition with the cables going to the coils (A "her"/negative connection..). It doesn't seem to fit anywhere. Do anyone know what wire this is?

Thank you!

A picture of the switch in question would help. There is a front stop light switch under the headlight in the front brake line. There are usually a few extra wires. There are excellent wiring diagrams in the manuals at the top of the page. I like to sit down with a cold drink and find the wires on the diagram and follow them to their end.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

So my questions are:

1. What is "front stop switch" in the wiring diagram? I always assumed it was the engine killer switch, but it doesn't fit with the wiring, so now I'm confused... The right front brake lever actuates the stop switch. Its a pressure activated 3-way on/near the bottom of the steering neck (if stock).

2. I have a switch that switches on and off the light (back and headlights), but it doesn't seem original. Is this my front stop switch? Stock, it should only defeat the Headlight so you can use the electric starter without also drawing headlight power from the battery. Later years had an interrupt built into the START circuit.

3. Also there is a loose black cable that comes out of the harness, by the ignition with the cables going to the coils (A "her"/negative connection..). It doesn't seem to fit anywhere. Do anyone know what wire this is? Solid black from the key provides power to a few places... Idiot lights, Horn, RH switch pod, KILL/RUN switch, etc. You'll have to be a bit more specific on exact switch models (pictures) and harness connections.

Thank you!
