Aftermarket / Replica handlebar switches - any reviews?
« on: August 09, 2018, 11:34:56 AM »
My left switch wiring is getting really really old, this is on my commuter 400f which is used in all weathers, the whole bike is probably getting a new harness very soon actually. I see there are several suppliers of replica switchgear- has anyone tried any / had a good look to see how it compares to original Honda quality?

I don't have experience with the 400F but I replaced my 750K with aftermarket.  The switches are pretty basic.  There are a couple of things to look out for.  Check the wiring colors against what you have and note any differences and make appropriate changes when reconnecting the wires.  Check for function of the switches and check the crimps on the terminal ends and the solder joints inside the switch.  In a cheap repro you can have the crimp connectors poorly crimped (I've seen where the insulation wasn't removed and the whole crimp was over the insulation.  Also the solder points can be poor.  Both are an easy fix.  One of the control housings I bought didn't have the post that engages the handlebar so I had to drill a hole in the casting and use a 4mm screw with the head cut off as the post.  The posts are supposed to be your ground contact for the switch.

I bought mine from David Silver Spares here in UK and I'm very happy with them. I have a CB400F2.  I chose the aftermarket ones which are way cheaper than the genuine ones but they look just the same. See them on this page: https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB400F-SUPER-SPORT-FOUR/

Thanks, yes I've already seen the DSS ones, they are the cheapest of the replicas too so look to be a very good  option. Virtually half the price of a genuine one, hopefully they will last at least half as long.

I have done the DSS switches on a 400F and  a new wiring harness. You should be fine across the pond. There were a few differences in the States OEM parts like the passing switch but nothing to hard to figure out. I am a big believer in new harnesses when doing a resto, helps keep the Gremlins away.
