oh mama, what have i done?!?!?!
« on: January 13, 2007, 11:23:33 AM »
1976 cb750f

this is my first engine rebuild

recently tore down the engine - new rings, honed the cylinders, milled the deck, new valve guides, blablablabla.

after putting everything back together, when i spin the crankshaft the camchain doesn't spin!!!! it's as though the camchain somehow came off the crankshaft! how could that happen? is there something else pperhaps going on? is there anyway to remedy the situation withoput taking the entire engine apart again? if i do need tot ake the engine apart, have i chumped the cyclinder head gasket because i torqued it down?
ANY help would be appreciated. thanks everyone!

the cam install was fine - put the cam on the chain first, then on the camshaft, then put the tensioner on....

If the camchain came off the sprocket on the crank you'd know, as it will be a lot slacker going onto the cam sprocket.

If this is the case, you do not have to break the motor again. Take off the cam, attach a string to the chain to prevent it from dropping to the crankcase. Lower it slightly to reposition on the crank, lift and re-install the cam. You may have to fish a bit, but its not a big deal.

Man, I wish I had thought of that when I did my engine. Same thing happened to me. Only, I went ahead and took the head off again to get the chain back on the crank.

***WARNING***
If you do end up having to take the head off - Get a new gasket!!! I desided to go the cheap route since my gasket didn't look too bad. Now at the right front of the engine I have a small, seeping leak which, as we all know, requires the engine to be pulled to replace.

I hate to ask such a question but..... Did you replace the 2 bolts holding the cam chain sprocket to the cam? That would be real easy except for pulling the engine which hopefully hasn't been installed yet. No new head gasket with this situation.
