Tappet Cover broken

Quick question on a broken tappet cover (CB550)

I have two tappet covers that have crack and a little chip holes in them, would it make any difference in running of engine? by sucking extra air?

Probably wont make a difference in running butbthats a easy place to get moisture into your engine.

They just seal the holes, nothing structural. Still, you can get brand new ones from David Silver Spares and 4into1 and a number of other places, and there are plenty of used ones on EBay. I would just pick up a couple replacements for the long-term.

If they seize a broken one can be a real pita to remove.  But that would be true if it were not broken...

Same caps as lots of small Hondas, 50cc etc. Use 6 sided drive only on them as they always seem 16.8mm head!

16.8... that explains my troube getting the ones a PO over tightened off my 500.....

I had ordered new caps but just wanted to ensure that leaky cover isn’t like leaky carb boot.

get a cheap six side socket and grind the opening so the lead in ramps are gone like the one on the left here.

When installing the new ones keep in mind that they're just oil seals and should only be put on snug, not super tight.  That huge "nut" on top tends to make a lot of people assume they need to be really cranked down.

Then just tighten it by hand, or at most a finger ratchet.

I don't know why so many people assume they need to torque these covers down.

A lot of it's probably due to people trying to stop a leaky tappet cover by tightening it instead of just replacing the old seal.

True.  Also, since covers don't come with seals, many people re-use the old worn out ones.
