Hi:
First post here ever! Special thanks to this group for allowing me to lurk for the last few years. The advice and notes on this forum helped me restore and build 4 bikes including the 75 & 71 in the photos.
The Planet Blue 75 has a Body Set from Yamiya750. You have to be okay with the right side petcock on the newer bikes and as indicated here and elsewhere, there are fitment issues, but the effort to get it done, for me was worth it.
I did consider sealing up the right side petcock boss and welding in a bung on the left side for the correct petcock. I decided against that – between the fact that the tank was not designed with the proper area for the bung and the risk of paint damage made this option a nonstarter for me.
The petcock mounting boss on the Yamiya tank places the petcock's back fuel outlet within 2 - 3 millimetres of the carb linkage and even then you only get that clearance if the carbs are mounted to the bike dead level - even the slightest upward angle at the back of the carbs ends up with linkage to petcock contact. Solving this requires some careful adjustment (turning) of each of the intake boots after the carbs have been mounted – I was quite surprised at just how much angle adjustment I actually got. It also means that the air box ends up with a slight angle (given the lines on the side of the airbox, this is especially noticeable). I'm going to fab up some longer mounting brackets for the top of the airbox so I can get it back to level again so it looks right. Additionally, installing the tank cap was a bit of a struggle as the hinge pin boss had been welded in place slightly on an angle, but a little perseverance with a small drill bit in a pin vice got that done too.
The tank is slightly smaller overall than the stock Honda tank (I'm guessing it holds a bit less fuel). It is a bit narrower and doesn't look quite as tall – but you don't notice this unless you have the tank side by side with a stock unit. The inside (where it mounts over the frame tube) is definitely on the narrow side – work and patience was required to get the tank to fit over the wire harness, ignition switch wiring and throttle cables. I ended up with an additional challenge here as I chose to wire up a Powerlet 12V outlet which added another wire to navigate the tank over.
Appearance wise, the tank is very nice. The paint is smooth and deep and decals look great. The other parts in the set: headlight ears, headlight bucket and side panels are overall very nice pieces – the fit was good and the quality seems to be top notch. The emblems in the pics are all from Yamiya as well.
