Topic: Green but considering a project

Folks,

Its been a lot of years since I've owned a bike, but I am settled after moving around and have the means to start a project. I've been studying some online material, youtube diary builds, etc...  and really feel the urge to take on a CB550 or possibly a CB750.

I like the looks of the early ones and will probably restore it to be an occasional driver with at least a stock look with perhaps a few updates.

I'm pretty handy, but not a mechanic by any means. I do have a lot of patience and a budget.

I don't have a lot of experience looking for the right project bike though. I'm in Durham, NC, USA. Any kind souls out there willing to give me some advice?

550s are nimble and quick, great for blasting around. 750 is a tad larger, more suitable for a larger framed person, and easier on a two-up ride.

Recently were a couple fo bikes for sale in Fayetteville and other nearby cities.

I am 6'3" so maybe 750 might make more sense.

However, I've watched Dean Segovis' 750 rebuild. I'd like to find something running or close to it and not in boxes. 

If you run across any promising currently for sale would love to get a pm.

Both are great bikes, but as pointed out, your height would lead you to the cb750. I've owned both and have the opposite problem of you, I'm only 5'10" and its all torso. The cb750 was a bit more unweildy to me for only a minor gain in performance (even when two up riding in my experience). They aren't too hard to work on if you are willing to read and put in the time. Also, parts and projects are very common in the North Carolina area. I'm in Charlotte, NC and if you have any particular questions or part needs, I may be able to hook you up. Good luck!

By the way, whatever bike you get, make sure it has a good clean title with the correct VIN on the frame and title. NC DMV can lead to some nightmare scenarios.

My ideal scenario I think is a flavor of an early CB750, running with most parts but needs some work.
