Erratic Points
« on: August 19, 2018, 10:11:02 AM »
Replaced 76 CB550F points with cheap ones from 4into1. 2-3 is firing much more erratic than 1-4 (see link). 2-3 has a brighter arc that’s all around the contact surfaces where 1-4 is consistently in the center of the surfaces. The old points that I replaced had a fixed post (the fulcrum of the points), new points have a removable post which was loose compared to 1-4. This was causing problems holding a gap and 2-3 wouldn’t fire after a short amount of run time. I JB welded this post on 2-3 and it’s holding a gap well now, but I don’t like the visual difference between both sets.

All four cylinders are firing pretty well under idle, not so well past 1/8 throttle, but I believe that’s a carb issue I’ve got to sort out yet.

Do y’all think this erratic arcing is going to cause problems down the road? Suggestions on a better set of points I should get? Don’t really want to go with electronic ignition if I can help it. Thank y’all

I'd start with interchanging the condensers (easy) and see if the arcing follows. If so, abandon that condenser.

Looks like bad condenser on 2-3,....I wouldn't trust JB weld on a set of points

Swapped condensors. Y’all are correct, spark followed condenser.

Put one of the old condensors on and bike is running great.

Any brand recommendations for points and condensors? Got this kit https://4into1.com/tune-up-kit-honda-cb500k-cb550/ and two out of four were bad.

I just watched your video, and I know the quality of the aftermarket points has been dsicussed before, but if you watch the points on the right side, you can see that they're not pivoting on the post properly. I'm not sure how you were able to properly set the gap!
