We are in the midst of rebuilding our 5th 750A (1977) purchased from the original owner last month and have upon initial inspection run into a question regarding rocker arm placement/location. Each individual rocker arm is numbered with either a cast "65" or "42".
Talking with the original owner this afternoon he said he removed and reinstalled the rocker arms when doing a base/head gasket replacement and other maintenance procedures and could have possibly reinstalled the rocker arms in the incorrect positions. He said that it ran "hot" after reassembly.
Currently on the INTAKE SIDE there are "42"s on Cylinders 1 & 3 and "65"s on Cylinders 2 & 4 .
Currently on the EXHAUST SIDE there are "42"s on Cylinders 1 & 3 and "65"s on Cylinders 2 & 4. I don't think this (as currently installed) is correct and here's the "rub"......I don't know if the current placement is correct or not.
I believe the same number rocker arms (e.g "65"s) should all go on one side (intake or exhaust?) and the other numbered rocker arms ("42"s) on the other side (intake or exhaust?).
My question is: What numbered rocker arm goes on the intake side and what numbered rocker arm goes on the exhaust side for INTAKE and EXHAUST?

?
I've scoured the FSM and cannot for the life of me find out this info and hoping someone that has the answer can help us resolve this issue/question. Is the current placement correct or am I just "overthinking" rocker arm placement?

??
Once again I sincerely appreciate any information/help you can provide on our latest "challenge"!
*****UPDATE (08/22): One of my friends from the SOHC Forum called me yesterday and said he had a low mileage 750A engine in his garage and was more than willing to pull the valve cover so we could take a look at the rocker placement on his engine. Needless to say I "hot-footed" over there to discover that the rocker placement on his engine was as I described on mine during my initial inspection.
This proved enough "validation" for me so now head rebuild progress can continue! It also continues to prove the willingness of the M/C Community to share information faced with my readily apparent lack of it!!
