Fitting 530 O/X ring chain
« on: September 27, 2018, 01:06:06 PM »
I want to fit a 530 O/X ring chain to my UK CB750 K2.

Can anybody advise a make/brand that they know will fit without any problems, particularly chafing against the engine cases due to the 530'th wider width, since it is not possible to space the gearbox sprocket due to the way in which it is mounted.

Thanks

Andy

I have not experienced or heard of anyone having problems with 530 o or x ring chain on a cb750...it's the smaller ikes you have to be wary of in this regard
If it works good, it looks good...

Just  pick a brand you like, and fit it.
I rode a K2 in the seventies, and with the upcoming of o-ring chains switched without any problems to that then new technique, using several brands like Tsubaki and D.I.D. I only know of problems with the 500/550 concerning space.
At the moment my only sohc4 bike is a cb400f, and i feel no need trying an o-ring chain on that, a normal chain exceeds 10k km without too much wear

I have fitted a Tsubaki Sigma 102 link chain (long time ago), a DID X-ring chain (102 links) etc etc to my CB750K2 or CB750K4 with no clearance issues (17/48 sprockets). As has been said already pick a brand that suits your budget and buy. Only choice to make is endless or master link (master link for me).

Do keep in mind that not all x/o ring type chains are the same. Some are wider than others, even though they are
advertised as the same size. The pitch may be compatible, but width CAN vary from one brand to another.
Measure and compare before you buy. I found this out the expensive way. My bike is a 750k5, and the RK brand
X ring chain was rubbing the case upon installation. I took it off and sold it to a sport bike guy for half of what I paid
for it. Lesson learned.

Thanks for the replies.

It is because of, what I believe, is the variants in the width of the 530 O/X ring chains that fitting a make/manufacture which is known not to cause any chafing against the engine cases is desirable, getting overall width dimensions before purchase is not always possible, particularly if bought online.

CB750, no problem with 530 O/X-ring chain.
It depends where you live. In Europe we have DID as a common chain.
DID 530VX 100 links with hollow rivet link. For this a riveting tool is needed too.
Solid rivets are PITA to rivet. Need an expensive tool from WHALE.

They sell kits here with sprockets stock sizes 18:48 + chain

If you prefer 17 teeth front, order chain and sprocket separate

riveting tool: https://www.wemoto.com/bikes/honda/cb_750_k2/71-72/picture/chain_riveter

There is a stronger version of chain too. Might be good if your engine is modified and produce more power.
DID ZVM-X Super Heavy Duty X-Ring.

Note! You do not need to open an installed and riveted chain until it is worn out. I lift chain by removing front sprocket, slide chain backwards. Now can engine be pulled out of the frame or lift chain off the rear wheel when removing it for tire change.
Good idea to order an extra rivet link with chain since it is easy to make mistakes, like forgot an o-ring or rivet too hard. You need spacers on both side when riveting to avoid press the link too hard together.

Thanks Pe We.

I am based in the UK so the details you have provided are very helpful.

I only need a chain as the sprockets have only done 4K miles.

The DID 530VX is a good chain, I'm surprised and impressed by the small amount of adjustment it's needed over the 4000 k's I've put on it so far, basically half a turn on each of the chain adjusters. Downside is you need the special tool to install the rivet, I tried and failed with alternative methods.
71 or thereabouts 750 K1 - this one should have been put down
