What is this Kawi racer ?
« on: September 03, 2018, 08:09:14 pm »
Got delivered to new owner, at the Bonneville GP.
He is in England.
Very cool bike last run in 78 I think, in the spares pile a wheel caught my eye, magnesium Morris. I asked him to email me if he wants to parts with it.

Also they were delivering 3 bikes up north, at least 2 were in CMR frames, with Hindle pipes .. FJ motors I think

Where do they originate from? The white one looks like the F1 Harris frame that Jim Wells raced here in the UK in the early 80s.

The Kawi was found in Caifornia, delivered to Tooele racetrack, to a crew whose owner was overseas.

The white FJ bikes they had assembled using Canadian CMR frames and swingarms.. nice work
Those 2 and anothe FJ got loaded  thru the day for delivery to a customer.

The Kawi is Z1 900/1000 motor or possibly the later J model 1000/1100 judging by what little I can see of the valve cover...no idea on the frame.  1976 KZ900 could be had with Morris wheels from the factory, although they were not the magnesium variety and were quickly replaced by Enkei look a likes.
If it works good, it looks good...

It's the frame, that they did not know the maker of. Perhaps the buyer knows , but was not present

The White bikes are CMR   ..Denis Curtis frames.. very nice.

Sorry, I got a bit confused there as the white one's (Yam) frame is just so much like the Harris F1 Kawa's - see link below. That cannot be a coincidence, they must have copied the rather famous Harris. https://www.caferacer.net/forum/vintage-motorcycle-racing/25355-harris-kz750.html

The FJ based bikes may be for the PI Challenge for the US team. They are going all out this year with very high quality bikes.

Yes those are two of the Phillip Island bikes for Team US. Dennis indeed built the frames.

They loaded two like that, and a painted complete one on a truck, then we're going to deliver them.

Aside from the nickle plating, what stuck out to me was the main tube of the swingarm, and the chain adjusters, which look very Seeley.

yes they look like a copy of the harris f1 frame , the 1100 yamaha has become a very popular engine choice . mc williams rides one in a harris frame , not quite sure how they are allowed in a classic race though . i am sure i never spotted one racing in the period .  phillip island may have to do without a good british team this year , changes to fuel ( unleaded only ) and the way it is funded ( no more money to the teams ) has made it much less attractive . it would be a shame if we cant send a competitive team .

There are many of these engines used as part of a Phillip Island package. I must be wrong because I thought those cranks were a weak link once pushed to certain power point. Some are upwards of 180 HP. Anyone know these engines well?
