Have you verified the job done inside the engine?
Stock head or ported, valves?
Cams?
"Trap door" mod down the oil pan to ensure oil during accelerations. It was something with pump pickup.
Gearbox snap rings....?

Ha ha, no, I haven't checked the gearbox snap rings! It's a 1977 Z1000 (KZ only in US/Canada) with a later GPZ1100 head and cylinders, Moriwaki pistons, welded and balanced crank, ported head, unknown cams, Suzuki GSXR750 carbs, Dyna ignition and coils. The PO was a bit vague, he was suffering from some weird form of cancer and didn't look too good, so I didn't push him. It sounds good, so I'm not gonna pull it apart, I'll just ride it. I do have a 1428cc kit and another set of cases for it, but that'll be for a later stage. ;D

That head means bigger valves as stock, right?

I read Kawasaki tuning shops web page about heads and their valves. Z1000 got larger valves than Z1-900, later heads even larger.

I saw a Z1-900 with1400cc and modified enough to run 140whp on dyno, maybe a few more.
I think it was this bike. Same shop (mechanic) that ported my K6 head 83-84 and refurbished it a few years ago.

Nice! I've got an Arias 1428cc block and pistons and another set of cases that have been bored for the big fat cylinders, and will slowly collect all the other parts I need to build an engine. I hope it'll make more than 140 BHP though, my 1100 is probably good for that now? I think 180-200 would be a nice target? ;D

Well I had to change my plans yesterday when I had to drive to my home town, Bairnsdale, to evacuate my mother and sister. Things are pretty grim there, lots of the places I knew so well all those years ago have been destroyed, but because the fires were on the other side of town and all I could see was smoke, I had no idea of the enormity of the situation.

I rang my cousin tonight, who had to evacuate the place he bought only a few months ago because the heat was so intense from the wall of flames 2 miles from his property that it was unbearable, and I can tell you all, my cuz is one very tough man. He said the thing that pissed him off the most is he'd just moved all his vintage cars and bikes, machinery etc out to the property from his house in town, and over the last couple of days, has had to move them all back. Here's a pic he sent me from the western end of my home town, tonight. Scary.

Wow,  Was seriously out of the loop over the last of December and into the New Year.  Massive devastation and seriously horrific situation in Australia. I hope some more international help comes to help kill this fire and get it under control.  Wonder if a hyperbaric bomb could kill a fire or would even work. Yeah, an extreme measure but it is at that stage and probably passed that stage a while ago...

Can you imagine the public reaction to this kind of crazy idea if it would even work. It is likely unable to work because of the extreme heat wouldn’t dissipate and would reignite when the air rushed back in.

Pray for rain and lots of it to help kill these fires.

That' s a horrible situation down there. I hope your Police  and Fire dep will investigate how this started.
I think about extremists which can multiply quickly nowadays over Internet social media and corrupt news like weather maniacs causing a situation they blame something else to force quick changes bypassing the system and logical thinking.

Lets hope all people will not get harmed, their classical bikes and cars included.

Thanks guys, it's really scary, and yes, I have no doubt that some of these fires were deliberately lit, although I don't know if it was an act of terrorism, or just the usual nuts who get off deliberately lighting fires. We're getting a little rain over the next couple of days, but it won't have much effect on the fires that are burning now, because they're so huge.

The fire commissioner said that they're expecting two of the big fires to my east to join up in the next couple of days, so they'll have a fire front of around 80 miles, which is incredible.

Anyway, I'm waiting for a delivery of shelving for the Tardis, SteveO suggested that I need to organise my garage better, so I'm hoping to get enough stuff off the floor to allow me to fit one extra bike into the garage. (The Kawasaki) The only problem now is I'll have to wait for the rain to stop before I can drag everything out to "organise" it.

I think I mentioned that the Kawasaki is currently "Kick Start only" so i did  little investigating to see if there was a starter motor in it, there is sort of, but not one that I can use. I think I better pop the alternator cover off and see if there's still a rotor or a stator, or even enough crankshaft to mount one there........... ;D

This is pretty familiar to me, terry.  My kz1000 was in a similar no electric starter state when I started with it.  I am gonna guess you will find missing under the stator cover several gears,  spacers, bearings, and the starter clutch itself.  It took me a few years tracking it all down and a few parts may still be available from kawasaki.

Thanks Sean, yeah mate, as long as he hadn't trimmed the crankshaft I'll be happy. It started surprisingly good on the kicker, but I do need to keep the battery charged. ;D

No water bombing aircrafts down there? We had a huge fire  50 km away from me 2014. We got help from Italy that have water bombing planes that flew here.
Fly low over a lake and take in water, to the fire and deliver.

Fire went to a monster thanks to incompetent firebrigade management neglecting the fire when started.

I have taken some nice photos of my bikes after the fire where the forest were, now a place tourists visit.

Where have all Kawasaki Z1-900 and Z1000 gone? I talked about this wirh a friend recently that also seldom see them here in Sweden.

Pewe, don't forget how really, really, NOT rare cb750's are compared to Z1/900/1000.  While Honda was cranking out 100's of thousands, the much more expensive Kawasaki only sold a third as many, as just an educated but very approximate estimate.  And then, at least here in America, they have been being imported back to Japan, by the container full, for years.

Yes mate, I saw some "Elvis" helicopters when I was in Bairnsdale on Friday, and we had some dropping water on the fires here near my place on Monday.

As Sean has stated, there were far fewer Z1's and Z1000's than Honda CB750's, and many (like mine) ended up as drag bikes, and so I suppose that apart from clean original bikes in the hands of collectors, or exported back to Japan, there are probably lots in sheds that have been "retired" from competition now that Hayabusa's are the most popular drag bikes? I do feel a little proud that it took a bike built in 1999 to replace the old air cooled Kawasaki DOHC4's that were the "Go-To" bike to race from as early as 1973, so 26 years of domination at drag strips all over the world is a pretty good record. The benefit for me is that good used race parts are plentiful, and relatively cheap. My Arias 1428cc kit, bored cases and ported head cost less than $1000.00 USD.

Sadly the prices of early Z1's are out of the reach of folks who aren't rich, and KZ900's and 1000's are heading in the same direction. I got this thing really cheap, but of course I've spent more than the purchase price on parts to turn it back into a road going bike. The good thing is that this bike is so far removed from an original bike, I don't mind doing some "custom" work on it to make it the bike that I like, even if some "collectors" (investors, in other words) would shudder........ ;D

This thread almost makes me regret NOT getting that cafe'd KZ1000 that I looked at before buying the tombstone project bike. It was being sold as "nearly finished" but was clearly a badly patched up worn out beater. They did the bare minimum to make it presentable and I was supposed to believe its "8000 rpm or nothing" cold idle was "normal for bikes of that day and age". I walked away, but the price that seemed high might actually have been ok for a kz1000 In that condition. I am now finding anything '70s bigger than 650cc, in pretty much any condition, commands fairly high prices.

Nice to see threads about just about any cool '70s bike here though. Subscribed...

Ha ha, Frank's just saying that he's tougher than all of us "part time motorcyclists" Jim, and just because Honda was thoughtful enough to put an electric starter on their 750's, he thinks it's gay (not that there's anything wrong with that......) to actually use it.

Well I'm happy to follow his lead, I won't have time to source all the parts needed to make the electric leg on Max work by the time I want to ride it the 1300 miles from Melbourne to Newcastle via Sydney and back next month, so by the time I get home my right leg will probably look twice as big as my left, as this sucker is way harder to kick over than a CB750.

That effort will no doubt make me the manly-est man on this forum, and Frank will have to kneel before my altar and pass the sword of masculinity to it's rightful owner............ ;D

Fark, I hope that doesn't happen to me Sean, I'm not in the best of health at the moment, so don't need any more problems! The PO of the beast made his own metal footpegs, and as you swung the kicker  down, it was easy to bang the inside ankle on the peg, which was super painful, so I took it off and threw it in the trash before I kicked it over in that vid, I'm hoping I don't have a problem with the OEM pegs I'm putting back on.

Oh well, if I can't kick start it, there should be several hundred other "Zedders" at the rally who can push an old cripple....... ;d
