Help with making a CB500 air box lid
« on: September 07, 2018, 05:57:27 AM »
It seems I will have to make an airbox lid for a 71 CB500 I am helping a friend with. They seem to be the real deal unobtanium. I know CMS has a reproduction but they are $100 USD. I have tried to search and cant tell from the parts fiche exactly how these look. If anyone has a few pictures of a lid, I would certainly appreciate seeing them. Im interested in the elevation and cut outs mainly. Thanks.

The CB500 (A) for the US market never had that lid (17340-323-610). You may consult the parts lists. They're all here: http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb500

I must be the dumbest guy on Earth, The fiche at CSM and the Honda4fun fiche in Italian show exactly the same part and part number.  What am I missing? and what was there instead on a US model? Needs some sort of cover.

Really, it's all in that page in the Parts List. Looking at fiches and you will miss the overview of how present (and missing!) parts related in the various models. That part 8 probably was ment to protect the filter element against ingress of water that got there by the riding wind. The 'duct' did a better job however.

I have a 72 CB500. (I'm not certain the 71 is identical.)
It has a filter box lid and tool tray combo, with a screen and molded rubber gasket for the intake portion.  These are rather a complex molded parts.  It doesn't completely seal the fron of the air filter box and needs an additional rubber molded part to complete the installation.

Have you tried parts dismantlers?

They are not unobtainium if you can still buy these parts.

Imo, the $100 parts purchase is the additional cost of purchase of the bike that the P. O. Stole from you.  Hidden charges, if you will.  Not everyone gets free bail for their mistakes.

The tool tray/lid that TT describes is on the fiche showing the main bike frame, probably further down the parts list.
