Topic: 1969 CB750 Sandcast Restoration Timelapse

Hi everyone!

I bought CB750 Sandcast #538 from the original owner who had parked it more than 30 years ago. Amazingly, the bike had never been modified. But it was in rough shape. A perfect candidate for a full restoration!

Last time I restored a Sandcast (#410), I decided to take a unique picture of it:

For Sandcast #538, I decided to do something different; to record the entire experience and create a film! I ended up with almost 40 hours of timelapse footage...a bit too much for most folks  So I created a five minute version to tell the full story. Enjoy!

Bankerdanny, yeah, I spent a lot of time mulling over the seat. It was in surprisingly good condition...but the original red foam was crumbling badly. I took things slowly and worked with a heat gun a lot to get the cover off and back on again without damaging it. Worth the effort to have an original seat cover and pan with fresh foam!

Johnie, this is the first time I have painted stripes on one of my restorations. Sandcast #410 has original paint, so I didn't need to worry about it. Prior to that, I used decals like many people do. This time, I measured the stripes on an early original tank and took the plunge. Super happy with the results. I'll never use a decal again!

Good video that show how easy it really is to restore and build a CB750! 
But it is clear that you have done this before, you know how to do and which parts to replace by NOS (if finding any) and new.  Original pistons very important here, replace by new, not very early is like pee in the church....

I guess you have stacked up with good Sandcast/early K0 parts when finding them before you need them. Maybe before prices went crazy.

Or did you use all original parts, refurbish them only? Like re-chrome rims and fenders, spokes and nipples got new surface treatment ...

Restore to stock or very close is probably the most beautiful way for a CB750

That is one of the coolest motorcycle videos I’ve seen. The workmanship is exemplary as well. I don’ t know much about Facebook but do you have that video up so that it can be shared? I have a bunch of friends who don’t restore, build, or even own vintage bikes but they appreciate them and the work that goes into them.They would love to take the 5 minutes to watch that video and I’ll bet so would a bunch of other regular Joe motorcyclists. On another note. Did you ever get any more of the posters made up of the Sandcast Parts Picture? I have a special place in my garage that would be perfect -lace to showcase that poster.

I considered changing the pistons, but the original pistons were in great shape. I, of course, changed the rings. The engine is the smoothest 750 I have ever built. Amazing.

This video rebuild was awesome.  I did slow it down to .5x during some of the engine work as that is what I enjoy watching the most.  The finished bike turned out beautiful.

About smooth CB750...
I guy around here has a K0 -70 in restored mint condition. It runs very even and is the most silent CB750 I have heard, like a sewing machine so I can imagine how this bike runs.

Stock CB750 is really fun and relaxing to ride. I have forgotten how it was until I built my K2, finalized end of march.
