1975 cb550f muffler removal
« on: September 12, 2018, 08:03:56 AM »
I got a used exhaust for my 75 cb550f and it has a rust hole underneath on muffler. Wanted to remove it to take to welder for patching but I don’t see a head on the clamp bolt to undo it.

Any experience with this please guide.

Thanks

That does not look like the stock setup. I would just use an angle grinder to cut off the head and buy a replacement stainless bolt at the hardware store.

Did you look on the other side for the nut?  The stud side has no head.

I looked at couple of other bikes plus the rotted muffler of my bike that it came with. All have same set up (headless stud).

First photo shows other side of stud, no nut

Maybe cut a slot into this side with a dremel and try and turn it out with a screwdriver?

I was also considering either this or double/ lock nut and open it few threads then grab with vice grips

My 750F had a weird screw similar to that also. Its like Honda wanted you to keep it on and make it difficult for you to remove.

that is weird, mine has a bolt and nut there. so yeah, just get that thing out whichever way, throw it away and replace it.
good luck with the patching. there will be a large area of rotten material that extends well beyond the visible holes. but these original exhausts are getting rare so if you can save it, good for you.

I drilled the stud out on the side there would normally be the bolt head. Replaced it with a stainless bolt, washer and nut. Hope that makes sense.

That is the original factory shear bolt. The head wrings off when it tightens. Drilling out the remaining stump is the correct way to go. Don't know why Honda did that.

Even once you get the fastener off, that muffler will be a bear to remove from the header, it is most likely rusted on. Just take the entire exhaust off.

That said, you better know a very good welder, that muffler looks toast to me!

Don't weld, but braze a patch over those holes.  Get rid of the surface rust first.  I did repair one of those a while back.

Planning on painting the muffler black?
