Can someone help tell me what these two wires are?
« on: September 14, 2018, 02:59:55 PM »
I have a green and black wire coming out of my wiring harness right near where my wires come out to my ignition coils. I am almost done putting my bike back together but I didn't take it apart and am having a hard finding out what these go to from the wiring diagram.

Solid green and a black near the coils are more likely switched power (Black) and the HORN wire (green). The GREEN could certainly be a ground, but if the color is lighter than the others, its the HORN.

I am sorry, what do you mean by "switched power"?

Thanks

The Black wire gets power thru the key switch only when moved from OFF. Hence, switched power. The black powers your idiot lights, carries power to the RH KILL/RUN which become BLK/WHT with RUN selected then on to the coils.

Okay, thank you very much. This is my first project and going into it I did not know much about wiring. As I have been spending countless hours on it and studying the wiring diagram, I am feeling a little more comfortable. I still cannot start the bike with the start button because something is causing my starter solenoid to not get power. I am assuming it is a safety switch or something. I do know my starter works because I hooked up the battery directly to it and it turned over.

My question is, where does this black wire plug into? ( I am sorry if you stated that I am just still a little confused ) and what other circuits might be blocking my starter solenoid from getting power if they aren't completed properly?

How about telling us the year and model of your bike so we can help you?  ;)

Yes I am sure that would help. It is a 1977 cb750K

Your horn has 2 spade connectors on the backside of it. Black to one, light green to the other. You’ll find the horn beneath the forks, right front of motor.

I actually am missing my horn. Could this be a reason that my starter solenoid is not getting power or does this have nothing to do with it?

The 'year' tells most of the world nothing. You need to determine your model precisely, including the socalled 'aerea code'. If you don't, nobody will be able to tell the right answer and you will receive just wild guesses. For instance the CB500K1 came with no less than 4 different wiring diagrams (UK, US, ED and GENERAL) and my CB500K2 (ED) has some 'blind' black and green wires (in the headlamp as well as below the tank) that I now use for extra's. Maybe your model has them too. Often it has to do with the wiring for the horn. Some models for Europe also had a PA switch to give lightsignals. Without knowing what model you have and the appropiate wiring diagram, you are lost, I'm afraid.

The starter probably (not sure about yours, different models, well... differ) has a safety system so it won't electric start in gear with clutch engaged. The clutch lever should have a switch that connects ground directly to the solenoid. The starter should work whenever the clutch is disengaged. Also the neutral switch should connect to a diode that grounds the solenoid in neutral. The diode prevents the clutch switch ftom lighting the neutral light.
There are also "starter safety unit" devices that do the same differently.
If you get power to the solenoid when the button is pressed but no ground to complete the circuit, look into that stuff. Also, the solenoid can seize up after 40 years but it can be disassembled and restored to working order.
